Happy Easter, Island Dwellers! Whether you're celebrating the resurrection of Christ, sharing a meal with your family, or taking advantage of the discounted chocolate eggs, we hope you have a wonderful Easter! Chances are, if you're reading this post on this special day, you may not have anything better to do. And you know what? That's ok sometimes. We've all had days when we feel out of place while everyone is off enjoying the obligations of a holiday (for me, that day is Valentine's Day). Thankfully, the world has many ways to help pass the time. If playing Night Spasm is your way of passing the time, we're not only grateful you chose us out of all the games in your massive Steam library, but we hope we can continue doing what we do best for players like you. Maybe others will find the same enjoyment in our silly little project one day. We hope you all have a fantastic Easter, and may your fridge be full of Sunday dinner leftovers! Be sure to visit the b]Night Spasm website and join the Night Spasm Discord server!
Hey guys, MasterMoes here. As you may've heard, Vander, former leader of MOG's colony since Year 11 of The Island, has been removed from his position due to his recent controversies. After a thorough investigation, Vander was found guilty of the following: Thievery, murder, human trafficking, kidnapping, arson, racism, sexism, homophobia, jaywalking, prostitution, defacing of historical artifacts, public urination, laughing at bad jokes, pirating episodes from Season 2 of Rick and Morty, leaking information about Hollow Knight: Silksong, stealing government information from the FBI, and opening a portal to the Shadow Realm. We're very sorry to inform you that Vander will no longer be involved in the Night Spasm storyline, his termination taking place the moment this message is sent. We hope you guys can continue to enjoy Night Spasm without him, and we promise to avoid casting characters who may get themselves involved in similar situations. Also, here's a mysterious set of numbers that definitely has no absolute significance within the game: 93458610 Have a good day, my little Night Spasm pookies. <3
Hello again, Island Dwellers! While developing Chapter 2, after officially deciding the writing style and formatting we want to go with for Night Spasm, we decided it would be best to rewrite ALL of Chapter 1's dialog in our fresh, new style! While the topical points and emotions behind each rewrite remain the same, all dialog should be much easier to read, no longer plagued by a young teenager's incapable writing style (15-year-old me really didn't know what he was doing...) Furthermore, all important characters now have a special voice blip to go along with their text, smaller characters using the default blip sound. Can you guess where each voice blip was sampled from? With these two additions to the game, we feel we've finally established Night Spasm's true identity, both chapters now harmonizing with each other much more than they did a year or so ago. We've been keeping a close eye on Steam Curator reviews and hosting beta testing sessions with various players close to our teams, and these two changes were most requested. As far as we know, this might be the last major update to Chapter 1 before Chapter 2's release (which, humorously, we've said before). As for Chapter 2's development, all is running smoothly. Almost every asset for the game is finished and polished, the entirety of the script and all of its routes are written, and almost all of the main game content has been beta-tested from start to end. Now it's a matter of finishing all of the other available routes, side stories, and post-game content, most of which is already halfway done. There's also the matter of publishing the game (and its soundtrack) on other consoles once the game is bug-free, likely a few days after the game's Steam release. We hope you will join us for Chapter 2's release, and we'll be sure to keep fans like you updated throughout development. Who knows? Maybe we already have some preview content on the backburner just WAITING to be released! That's all for this post! Be sure to visit the b]Night Spasm website and join the Night Spasm Discord server! Stay gaming!

Hello Spasmers, Gideon here. A few weeks ago I mentioned I had the honor of presenting Night Spasm at my college, Central Washington University. I presented the practical applications of being a video game creator and explained how I used psychology studies to enhance the player's storyline experience of my game. After giving my 10-minute presentation to all of the judges, I was told over 862 business, computer science, IT, and psychology majors used my presentation data and advice as sources for their own projects and as materials for assignments! Furthermore, I've been given the honor of explaining the leadership and marketing aspects of Night Spasm's development in a class this coming Fall. I'm very honored and excited to share more of my journey in game development, and I am eternally grateful for all of the online and local support I've received over the past few months! In honor of this milestone, I'd like to share with all of you the script and slides I used to explain Night Spasm's overall concept to the judges! It explains the general guidelines/rules I use when developing Night Spasm and defines my perspectives on video games, storytelling, leadership, and the future of our world as people. I intended to upload this presentation much sooner, but I had some trouble with Night Spasm's event page regarding uploaded images (I even had to contact Steam support to resolve it all)... You may notice that a lot of the images and lines presented below are currently a part of the Night Spasm store page. I figured the contents of the presentation were perfectly suited for new players ready to immerse themselves into the Night Spasm world. That was the purpose of these slides after all! Without further ado, I present to you:
Ver. 1.0.8.1 Chapter 2's development required a few game engine changes here and there, and now these changes are coming to Chapter 1! This update brings a few neat additions to the battle system, including a new negotiation mechanic. Why hurt your enemies when they can become your friend? Sure, you won't get any EXP, but perhaps the adventure is the friends we made along the way (not). Anyway, here are the patch notes: -Skills and items available in battle are now organized by their icon, allowing for much easier skill and item navigation in combat. -All inflictions with durations now consistently disappear after the victim of the infliction has performed their skill. Being unable to perform a skill ticks the removal timer down by 1 after every skill of a turn has been performed. -Escaping a battle is now considered negotiating, allowing players to ask for or give mercy to troops of enemies. The percent chance of avoiding a battle is based on the number of living party members versus alive enemies as well as an extra value based on the reputation of your colony. -Updated the breathing animation of enemies. It ain't much, but it's honest work. These features will make combat quicker and give players another strategy to win with, a much nicer and faster option at that. Enjoy the update! Hello Spasmers, Gideon here. Can you believe Night Spasm was announced 3 years ago today?!?! May 15th, 2020 marked the day the Night Spasm store page was set up, about a year after the project was started in my potato of a computer. Since Night Spasm's release as a demo via Chapter 1, Chapter 1 has gone from a playable (yet underdeveloped) project demonstration to the fully-fledged starting chapter we have today. Now the base game of all future chapters, Night Spasm has become a project I'm proud to share. Heck, I was so scared of people thinking my project was weird that I didn't even tell my family about the project until 6 weeks before I announced the project to the public! Now I've had the honor of showing Night Spasm to the world and meeting hundreds of wonderful people throughout my career. It's been a while since I've posted something, so I figured now's the perfect time to give y'all an update regarding Chapter 2 and show you some cool things I've been doing either on my own or with the development team.
Head on over to our Soundcloud page to hear 24 featured music tracks coming to Chapter 2!
We've been excited ALL YEAR to show you guys what's coming to Chapter 2! Let's kick it off light yet fun with a few music previews, available on our Soundcloud page!
Find them here!
I think it's safe to say... music is our favorite part of developing Night Spasm! I've been blessed with such a wonderful crew willing to put their time into making music for Night Spasm! Whether they've hand-made us a song specifically for the game or they've proudly let us use their music for anything we want, each composer (all solo freelancers by the way) established the tone we want Night Spasm to give off. If it weren't for their creative musical masterpieces, the rest of us here at FanFaction probably would've lost our ways trying to figure out the feel of Night Spasm's world. The soundtrack is our guidance for storytelling. When we come up with a new character interaction or a battle scene, we make it our priority to connect the scenario to a music track. Sometimes we reference a song we've already used, or maybe we make a whole new song just to establish the concept to its roots!
In honor of our composers, I'd like to thank each composer who stuck with us from the beginning:
-CrimsonSkyfall
-Xstep
-AZALI
-Astrogamer54
-And of course, let's not forget-... Oops! I'm not supposed to mention them yet...
Thank you all for making our jobs easier. Back when I first directed the project, I was worried I had to compose the entire soundtrack myself! While I was glad to do so at the time, nothing I make could compare to the unique tracks brought by the music team! So thank you, musicians, for setting the stage!
[Confetti noises ]
Oh, and don't forget... We're hosting a Night Spasm Kickstarter/Sweepstakes event soon! If you want to hear more of these wonderful songs earlier, be sure to support us!
That's all for now! Thank you for reading, and enjoy the music!
Your feedback and support are greatly appreciated. Keep those keyboards and controllers busy!

Ver. 1.0.8.0 | The Quality-of-Life Update Do you hear that? It's the voice of the Community, our favorite sound! A sound FAR better than the winter jingle bells for sure! Today we've come to bring you an early present! Night Spasm version 1.0.8.0 is out now! The Quality-of-Life Update features numerous... well, features, but with a touch of fan feedback following along. We'd send you some eggnog as well, but UPS doesn't like delivering perishable foods. Because Chapter 1 serves as a BETA/demo of the full game yet to come, we're surprised how many people treat this like a full game. Sure, it's a fully functioning game as it is, but this is just the beginning! Chapter 1 started as an early-access beta to raise funding; It soon turned into a free demo not too long ago. Since then, we've taken every little opinion from the growing community to further improve Night Spasm's future. We're very thankful for the community engagement we've received throughout development, and because of that, we're nearing the TRUE START of Night Spasm (more about that after the patch notes). For now, we've got yet another update to polish Night Spasm before the big advertisement campaign! Here are the patch notes: Ver. 1.0.8.0 -Added a terminology and symbol guide, providing details about certain stats and game mechanics! [Recommended by -Camera Insect- via the Night Spasm Steam Community] -Added a retry battle feature, where you can immediately restart a failed battle straight from the game over scene! Due to this new feature, you can no longer use a timestamp before a battle. -Added a new and improved crafting system! A new Crafting option will appear in your FAD menu, allowing you to cook, brew, and construct various items and equipment, so long as you have the proper ingredients, the correct tools, and the crafting recipe in your Recipes section. You even gain bonus EXP when crafting equipment! -You can now see the chance of hitting an enemy from the view stats option in combat. -Removed the bestiary menu. It wasnt very popular, so weve made way for a new system coming up in Chapter 2. Most enemy information is viewable in battle anyway. -Compressed Mode will now activate at the start of the game by default. Returning players can choose to turn it off. -Player and enemy ATK bonuses now pass on to other battles. -Changed the game over graphic. -Reverted Inevits graphic back to its original design, with a few polishes. -Party members will now regain HP after battles. The amount varies based on the remaining amount of BD the enemy had by the end of the battle. -You can now see the UC value of party members from the FAD menu. -Increased the contrast of every battle background, making battles more vibrant and easier to see in dark areas. -Added a sound effect when escaping a battle. -Enemies from random encounters now retain the enemy BD pool from the previous battle. -Most boss fights are now immune to freezing and sleeping inflictions. -Frozen, sleeping, binded, and mystified characters will no longer block or counterattack unless their EVA/CNT rates were above 100 beforehand. -Dead party members now receive EXP after a battle. -Greatly reduced the prices of Ingenes data books. Where did this update come from, you might ask? Couldn't tell ya. These updates kind of just appear out of nowhere. Must have been Santa Clause or something. Speaking of jolly gift-giving, there's something else you should know...
Ver. 1.0.7.9 Now you might be thinking, "how could Night Spasm get any better???" You may also be thinking, "Hmm, I still need to take a lunch break..." Wherever your brain-train might be, another update is here! With the sudden uprise of fan-made Night Spasm content going around, we've collected a few requests and bug reports that deserve to be implemented. We're ALWAYS looking to suit the needs of new players, veteran players, and our fellow Streamers/YouTubers. This update does just that! Behold, the patch notes: -Added the Compressed Mode for new players! Compressed Mode can be enabled when starting a new game, which shortens the dialog for those who dont care for the smaller details and for content creators ready to get into the game. Speedrunners might enjoy this feature too! -Added enemy randomization! After completing Region A1, all enemy troops will now contain random enemies! No more repetitive battles, each after-math encounter is unique and challenging! Other areas of the game have randomized enemies as well. -Removed the ability to skip a party members turn using the arrow keys. This is because new players kept accidentally skipping beneficial turns. -Fixed a glitch in the DLC room that caused players to spawn into a wall. This only happened to players who entered the left, top, or far-right rooms first. [Submitted by BlackDragonFN on our Discord] -Fixed a glitch in the Title Screen that allowed the menu arrow to move freely after watching the credits (perhaps this will be an easter egg one day?). [Submitted by BlackDragonFN on our Discord] As you can see, we've added a few features for all three categories of players. For those doing Night Spasm videos and/or streams, Compressed Mode is highly recommended! That's all for now! Ver. 1.0.7.8 Hello, fans! This is just a minor update that adds a little shoe polish to the old boots. But now that I think about it, shoe polish isn't really a thing anymore. Now we kind of just have Clorox wipes. This update's main spotlight is the new "action" command, which compresses all of your default abilities into a separate category. It's similar to the core skills command... actually, it's practically entirely the same. Oh well, it's just to make battles easier to understand anyways! These are da' notes: -Added the actions command! When leaving the base for the second time, certain default skills will migrate to the action tab which will organize your skill list in battle! -Reduced the number of enemies and hazards in the Celsius Chasm. Enemy appearance in the Celsius Chasm will now begin to shorten the more battles you fight. -Many support skills can now be used in the FAD menu before battle. Additionally, these skills no longer take up any durability in battle or in the FAD menu. -All multi-hit attacks and items now play each animation simultaneously. It ain't much, but it's honest work. We hope this will improve the Night Spasm experience! Please consider following the Night Spasm Steam Community page and our other forms of social media. Hello all you spicey gamers, Gideon here, Director of Night Spasm and CEO of FanFaction!
This is an ongoing project and the first phase of a multi-chapter game. Chapter 1 is completable, but the content is subject to change until the release of Chapter 2!
WELCOME TO THE ISLAND!
Night Spasm is a single-player philosophical role-playing video game where your real-life philosophies and worldviews alter the course of time in a dying world. Designed for only the bravest players, Night Spasm is an entertaining adventure of quests, combat, and personal learning experiences that tell a lore-rich story you can study, question, and interpret endlessly.
The story follows the lives of three main characters, Theodore, Vander, and Evana, three air pilots who find themselves in a mysterious world after seemingly dying from a plane crash. Saved from a cruel death by the wise and friendly mage known as "MOG", the pilots find themselves in The Island, a beautiful world once designed to save the lives of those meeting an unfortunate end, now locked in war by an ambitious and terrifying enemy. Inevit, a phantom of unknown motivations, has captured a mystical entity called The Rechance, the grand source of magic power responsible for saving the lives of countless creatures, including you.
As the player, you must guide the heroes in forming a colony to take down Inevit and restore The Island to its former glory. Or perhaps, you may have a different plan in mind for the heroes…
GAMEPLAY
The answers you seek determine the complications of your adventure. Explore strange locations and societies in an open-world environment to expand your colony and expand your base to interact with recruits, craft items, cook food, collect rewards for your expositions, and more. Featuring a turn-based yet hectic combat system, decide friend versus foe to greatly alter your timeline. Strategy and resourcefulness are keys to defeating your enemies, whoever they may be, as you teach your colony members new skills, equip them for combat, and get to know them better, one way or another...
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A SMALL DECISION...
From the people you spare to the side quests you decide to skip, there is no illusion of choice. Your choices matter.
The smallest of choices can mean danger to you, your friends, and the world around you. However, you, the player, are not directly in control of anything within The Island... Instead, you are nothing more than "an influence". Like the life we live beyond our screens, we aren’t in control of everything around us, as nice as it would be. Night Spasm is no different.
Unlike most games, you must manipulate what the characters think rather than what the characters do, meaning it’s up to the characters to decide how they react to your influence. Sometimes you choose what a character says but not how they say it. Sometimes you choose what a character talks about but not directly what they say… or even who says it...
From the people you spare to purposefully denying a side quest, there is no illusion of choice. Your choices matter.
A WORLD FILLED WITH TRIALS OF THE SOUL...
Night Spasm isn't just a game... it's a personal experience. Through The Island’s characters, lore, world, and the choices you make, there is much to learn about yourself. Prepared for the trials or not, turning the tide of your playthrough costs more than meets the eye. Can you endure the challenges of Night Spasm? Or will you walk away from your screen a different person...?
It’s up to you how you let your beliefs affect the storyline, but no matter what you choose, there will always be characters supporting your beliefs... or fighting against them.
Chapter 1 is free to play, and Chapter 2 is in development!
Chapter 1 includes over 30 hours of content and is designed for infinite replayability. Whether you're new to the psychological-adventure genre or a total RPG fanatic, there's an adventure calling your name... and perhaps, with an extra bit of curiosity by your side, there's more to this game than meets the eye...
