Space Haven 20th Major Update - Now Released!

Milestone Reached! Space Haven Enters Beta - Station Mode on the Horizon

Space Haven is ready to shed its Alpha label after 20 Major Updates. While not yet feature-complete, we feel we are close to a 1.0 release. Games like Space Haven can be worked on forever, a future 1.0 release does not mean we will stop improving on the game. It just means we are ready to move on from Early Access and finally feel content with calling the game a 1.0 release.

Does This Mean No More Updates?

Not at all! Were simply moving past the Alpha tag after 20 Major Updates and starting to plan a 1.0 release. Next upcoming: Betas first Major Update with Station Mode. Whether it is part of the main game or stands alone as its own game mode, well weigh every option to make it stellar with the resources we have. With those big news out of the way let's continue with the news on the 20th Major Update just Released!

A Note On Continuing A Saved Game From Alpha 19

Exodus Fleet Storyline is available when starting a new game or when traveling to a new galaxy. If you load a saved game from the previous version you will need to travel to a new galaxy to activate the Exodus Fleet Storyline. (You can travel to a new galaxy from a special sector found somewhere to the very right of the starmap, indicated with a special green icon.) (These instructions are only for those who want to continue a saved game from Alpha 19, or stay on Alpha 19. If you are happy with updating the game and starting a new game there is nothing you have to do, except let Steam update the game.) We recommend starting a new game to enjoy the new update, but it is possible to continue a saved game from the previous version, Alpha 19. If you want to continue playing the previous version, Alpha 19, and decide yourself when you want to update, we have made it possible through the following method: [olist]
  • Open Steam Library
  • Right click Space Haven
  • Select Properties
  • Go to tab 'Betas' at the top.
  • Select 'alpha_19' in the drop-down. (NOTE! Only do this if you want to stay on the old version) [/olist] When you are ready to move on to Beta 1, follow the above steps but choose "none" in the list. This will put you in the default branch and the game will update.

The 20th Major Update - The Exodus Fleet

    Good to see you, Pathfinders!

The 20th major update has just been released, and with it comes something weve been waiting to give you for a long time: a full-fledged storyline!

The Birth of the Exodus Fleet

The Exodus Fleet can be seen in a sector in the background. When Aksel reached out to me a few months ago to start planning this update, the vision was cleara fleet built and run by the Haven Foundation, humanitys best hope for survival, searching for a new homeworld led by a cast of officers the player could interact with and come to know. Predictably, I played the role of overenthusiastic artist and went overboard with ideas, and Aksel, Allan, and Matti then kindly trimmed my wild imaginings down to the few practical ones that would actually work in-game. The result? The Exodus Fleet, a massive refugee armada you can interact with for story and side missions.

    The Haven Foundation

Sheridan, the commander of the Haven Foundation's Exodus Fleet. You may have seen the Haven Foundation mentioned in lore logs. These scientists, engineers, and philanthropists saw Earths collapse coming and made a choice: instead of trying to stop the inevitable, they would build the technology needed to flee. Your own ships are based on their work! While most of the Foundation remains on Earth, gathering survivors and loading them into hypersleep chambers, the first refugee fleet has set sail for the stars. Leading it is Fleet Commander Sheridan and his department headsmore on them soon.

    The Ships

At the fleets heart is the immense HSS Boxleitner. Shes the largest colony ship ever built by humanity, carrying hundreds of thousands of people in hypersleep, waiting for a world they can call home. Keeping them alive is a waking crew of thousands, tending to hydroponic farms, industrial bays, power systems, and more. A ship like this is a prime targetwhich is why she doesnt travel alone. Her escort ships are goliaths in their own right, capable of grinding asteroids to dust and turning pirates into space debris. But keeping such a fleet running is no easy task

    Meet the Fleet Leaders

    • Fleet Commander Sheridan A former aid worker turned operational genius, Sheridan is a leader who balances compassion with practicality. The fate of humanity may rest on his shoulders, but if the pressure gets to him, he never lets it show.
    • Rufus Wright (Logistics) An old friend of Sheridans and the fleets lifeline. If it needs to be mined, built, or bartered for, Rufus makes it happen. He believes humanity isnt ready for a life among the starsbut hell make damn sure they survive.
    • Dr. Priya Kapoor (Medical) Tasked with keeping both the hypersleepers and waking crew alive, Priya is as devoted to medicine as she is to her faith. A follower of the Church of New Haven, she sees humanitys exile from Earth as divine willbut her duty to heal comes first.
    • Professor Orion Hayes (Research) A brilliant, scatterbrained scientist living his dream among the stars. Whether unraveling the mysteries of the Siren Worlds or studying alien life, Orion is equal parts genius and disasterand he needs someone to keep him on track.
    • Colonel Estera Marinescu (Security) A battle-hardened warrior whos been fighting since childhood. Pirates, slavers, alien bugsshes ready for all of them. When the going gets tough, Marinescu doesnt flinchshe gets things done.

    The Path Ahead

Unveil the mysteries surrounding Eden, like why a former Pathfinder crew member became a drunk. With such a vast responsibility, the Exodus Fleet needs skilled pathfindersscouts who can navigate the unknown, track down vital resources, and help chart a safe course through hyperspace. Thats where your ship and crew come in. With the aid of a special hyperspace beacon, you will become their guide and their most trusted agent. Whether your ship is a heavily armed battlecruiser, a troop carrier full of battle-hardened warriors, or an industrial powerhouse capable of building anything, youll be able to help in your own way. As you take on missions for the fleet, youll uncover strange signals, long-forgotten data, and whispers of something incredible: a world where the human race could start anew. But the deeper you search, the clearer it becomes that youre not the only ones looking. And out in the depths of space, not everyone wants humanity to find a home. The journey ahead will test your skills, challenge your convictions, and lead you to a decision that could shape the future of all humanity. I look forward to seeing what choice you make. Hambone, the writer of Space Haven lore.

    The Exodus Fleet - Gameplay

Sheridan, the commander of the Haven Foundation's Exodus Fleet.
The Exodus Fleet can be seen in a sector in the background. The Exodus Fleet is the Haven Foundations hope of bringing thousands of refugees from Earth to a new home somewhere out there in space where they can make a fresh start. Lead by Sheridan, the Commander of the Exodus fleet, the fleet needs to traverse a perilous galaxy in search of a new home. This is where you, the player, get a chance to become the new Pathfinder for the fleet. Beware though, something bad happened to the previous one. So the question is, are you up for the adventure?

    The Pathfinder

Seek out a crew member of the former Pathfinder ship and find out what happened to them. As the player you will be presented with the opportunity to become the new Pathfinder for the Exodus Fleet. As the Pathfinder your mission will be to work as one of the frontrunners for the Exodus Fleet, exploring systems and carrying out missions given by the Exodus Fleet.

Interacting with the Exodus Fleet and using Prestige Points

The Exodus Fleet will have its own needs that vary in status as you play. Crises and events may strike and the fleet will call for you to help. The Exodus Fleet will not adhere to the exact same rules as normal ships in the area where the player is. Instead, the Exodus Fleet will be in the background but still move forward with the player as you traverse the galaxy.
Become one of the fleet. Help the Exodus Fleet when they need you and call for aid when you need them. Become one of the Exodus Fleet. You will be able to interact with the fleet when you are in the same sector. You can call ships for aid, request resource transportations, new crew members or even unlock some technology. You will be able to do this through so called prestige points, which are acquired when carrying out missions or otherwise helping the Exodus Fleet.

    Exodus Fleet Crises and Events

The Exodus Fleet will have various crises affecting it on its journey towards Eden. Various types of crises may strike the Exodus Fleet as you and the fleet traverse through the galaxy. Dangers, like meteors or others, may hit some of the ships in the fleet affecting some area of production. This will have a direct impact on your interaction with the fleet and the ability of the fleet to send resources to you. You can help the fleet by finding special larger resource spots in the starmap, which the Exodus Fleet can use to replenish their resources.

    Resource Spots

Special larger resource spots will be appear on the starmap as spots for the Exodus Fleet to replenish their resources. Special types of larger resource spots, such as comets, mega asteroid fields, hyperium and energium clouds appear on the starmap. These large resource spots provide opportunities for the Exodus Fleet to replenish their resources. Explore the galaxy and help the Exodus Fleet by guiding them to these spots.

The Search for Eden - Main Storyline Missions

Carry out special missions for the Exodus Fleet to further the story of locating the mysterious Eden. The Exodus Fleet will need you as the Pathfinder to carry out special missions, which are tied to the storyline of finding a potential new home for the refugees from Earth, a new habitable planet.
Hmm... I wonder what this does! These missions are no ordinary missions. They are a mix of exploration, building but also scripted events. Surprises that might give you the shat pants condition if you are not prepared. We've put more time and effort into these missions, with the scripted events but also a lot of dialogue for those interested in reading how they relate to finding Eden.

    Starmap UI and Scanning

Starmap UI is updated, with the possibility to execute long range or short range scans in the starmap. We've updated the left hand side UI box in the starmap and added more functionality for the scanner. You will be able to execute long range or short range scans. Long range scans can reveal ship movement in the star system and short range scans may reveal hidden sectors.

Cargo Containers in Space and Derelicts

An abandoned cargo container floating in space.
Derelict ships can also have cargo containers filled with fun surprises. Abandoned derelict cargo containers can now be encountered in space and also on derelict ships. These abandoned containers may contain a surprise... Or two!

    New Siren Worlds

Siren Worlds will be changed to have both positive and negative effects, along with some mystery! We are changing the effects of the Siren Worlds. In Alpha 20 the effects will not only be negative, there will be some positive as well. While in the sector, researchers will get a bonus to their research speed for a period of time. Additionally, mysterious creatures might appear that may cause your crew to have a lift in mood or sometimes be scared!

New NPC Ships for The Haven Foundation and Flaming Swords

You will meet some new Haven Foundation and Flaming Swords NPC ships in the galaxy. We've created new NPC ships you can meet in the galaxy. You will be able to request assistance from the Exodus Fleet and they will send a Haven Foundation ship fitting your needs. The Flaming Swords is a special faction tied to the storyline of finding Eden. You may encounter their ships in the quest missions.

New Starting Ships for The Small Hope Scenario

We've created new starting ships for the Small Hope scenario. There will be new starting ships available for the Small Hope scenario. We've tried to make them different from each other allowing for different types of ships to emerge once they are expanded. Hopefully you will find success with the ship you choose!

    Cliffs on Asteroids

Asteroids will now have cliffs, which will make station building missions more interesting. We have created a cliff generation system for asteroids. The cliffs will create opportunities to add some exploration to asteroids and also make station building missions more interesting.

End Game Screens & New Music

End Game screens with new music and timelines that show your journey. We've implemented end game screens that have their own music and show a timeline of your journey. The timeline will show various stats and individual events can be inspected on the timeline.

    Many Other Improvements and Additions

We've done many smaller improvements and polish. The more advanced power generators will receive a new look. In addition to all of the above we have worked on other things such as polishing the user interface and making various graphical improvements. The more advanced Power Generators will receive a new look.

  • Embark on a space voyage with your ragtag crew of civilians in search of a new home. Build spaceships tile by tile, create optimal gas conditions, manage the needs and moods of their crew, encounter other space-faring groups, and explore the universe in this spaceship colony sim.

    • Customize - Complete freedom to build a spaceship or station of your own desire. Place every piece of ship hull, wall, door and facility wherever you want.
    • Functional - All facilities serve a purpose. Crew members will sleep in beds, use toilets, be disturbed by a noisy room and praise you for an arcade machine.

A functional spaceship can be built tile-by tile, giving you the opportunity to shape a spaceship of your own desire. It can be symmetric and streamlined, or an asymmetrical whimsical looking thing. It does not have to look like a conventional spaceship depicted in sci-fi literature, you are free to design your own, the choice is yours!

    • Oxygen and CO2 - Keep optimal Oxygen and CO2 levels by building life support modules for your crew members.
    • Hazardous gases - Certain facilities and explosions can release hazardous gases. Build scrubbers to purify the air.
    • Temperature and power - Build thermal regulators to maintain an ideal temperature for your crew. Build power nodes and set up power distribution throughout the ship.
    • Comfort - Building a bed right next to the ship core will disturb sleep. Design your ship for crew comfort.

The isometric tile-based gas system simulates various gases, temperature and crew comfort on your spaceship. Humans, plants and facilities react to the conditions surrounding them, giving meaning to how you design your ship and the living conditions you create. Secure facilities, optimize crew survival and well-being, but also think of possible future accidents and chaos generated from crew combat or environmental hazards.

    • Skills and traits - Every crew member has their own set of skills and traits. A wimp might get scared shooting a gun, while an iron-stomach can eat anything unaffected.
    • Mood - A happy crew member needs food, sleep, comfort, safety and friends. Take something away and their mood will be affected.
    • Conditions - Crew members might feel adventurous, suffer from starvation, feel unhygienic, or they simply ate too much. Various conditions affect how they feel.
    • Mental breaks - When the stress is too much for a crew member they may suffer a mental break. Some will vent themselves out of the air lock, while others might start a fight.

In Space Haven characters aren't mere robots. The game simulates needs, moods, health and skills of your crew members and they develop relationships with each other. Their past life occupation and hobbies will affect their skills and know-how, and they have both positive and negative traits. Witness joyful moments, depression, and drama surrounding different crew members as you journey onward seeking a new home.

    • Away missions - Equip your crew members and organize away teams to explore derelict ships or visit stations or spaceships of other factions.
    • Draft - Draft and move your crew members to attack enemies and save their friends.
    • Inventory - Each crew member has their own unique inventory. Equip them with pistols, rifles, grenades and more.

Equip your crew with space suits and weapons and organize away teams to explore derelict ships and stations. Explore and salvage resources and items; find activated cryopods with someone frozen inside. Visit spaceships or stations of other factions and find data logs telling stories of past spacefarers searching for a new home.

    • Crew combat - Engage in combat with enemy factions or an alien species.
    • Aliens - Watch aliens incapacitate your crew members and capture them alive. See them suffer in the alien lair and decide if you want to try to save them or not.

Aliens capture your crew members and cocoon them against walls in their base. See them suffer in the alien lair and decide if you want to save them or not. Explore derelict ships and discover someone from the original crew of the ship captured by the aliens. Events like these create interesting back stories to new arrivals to your crew.

    • Battlestations - Watch your crew take battlestations as you engage the enemy in ship-to-ship battle. See your crew load turrets with projectiles, put out fires from explosions, patch hull breaches and repair vital facilities in the midst of battle.
    • Tactical - Target the enemy ship engine and stop them from fleeing. See them do the same to you. Engage their turrets directly or try to focus on the enemy ship core and see their ship go pitch black. Build shields to protect your most vital segments of your ships.
Build turrets and engage in tactical ship-to-ship combat, where a hit and explosion could cause a snowball effect of fire, smoke, hazardous gases and even hull breaches for either party. All crew members need to work together to win the battle.

    • Cryopods - Protect your crew from side-effects of Inter-stellar travel. Place crew members into stasis to freeze the progression of a disease or to await rescue.
    • Medical - Treat crew members for injuries, wounds and diseases. Medical conditions affect crew members in various ways.

Your crew members will become wounded in battles and might catch a serious disease. Set up a medical room, scan for diseases and foreign masses and have your best doctor tend to illnesses and perform surgeries. Hope that your doctor is not absent minded and leaves a surgical tool inside.

    • Generated galaxy - Explore a new procedurally generated galaxy each playthrough, with planets, asteroids, stations and spaceships of other factions.
    • Factions - Interact with various factions all trying to survive and establish dominance their own way. Meet pirates, merchants, slave traders, cultists and more and develop relationships with each.

    • Resources - Mine for raw resources and refine them to building materials. Trade resources with other groups you meet.

Explore a new procedurally generated galaxy each new playthrough, with various factions all trying to survive and establish dominance their own way. You'll meet pirates, slavers, merchants, cults, androids and more. Jump into hyperspace, seek out resources and meet various groups and develop your relationship with them.

Cool things that can happen in Space Haven:

    • Gain a new crew member by finding a activated cryo chamber aboard a derelict ship.
    • Have a space burial for your fallen crew member to let other crew members say good bye.
    • Grow plants with bio mass and water recycled from toilets.
    • Eat the meat from a fallen crew member or an invader if desperation is high.
    • Watch aliens capture your crew member and cocoon them to a wall in their lair. Will you go save them or leave them there?
