In Planet Explorers, it is the year 2287, one of the first colony ships sent out by Earth arrives at the planet Maria, in the Epsilon Indi Star System. During its landing sequence, something appears in front of the massive ship that causes it to lose control and crash into the planet. Some of the colonists survive in lifeboats, but what they find is an unforgiving land filled with creatures ready to outlast the visitors from Earth. Now the survivors must explorer, gather, build, create, fight, and ultimately, build a new home.

Game Modes



Planet Explorers will feature single and multiplayer modes.


In single player there are 3 distinct selections

  • Story Mode – Story mode is the main meat and bones of the game, it is the action-adventure-rpg-somewhat-4X segment, offering npcs, missions, colony building, farming, ranching, training, diplomacy, and of course, a storyline that you can follow or ignore. This story features a 17X8km world map with many unique character, landscapes, biomes, locations, and over 100 types of potential enemies. Even though we’ve made it seem like a very action oriented game in the trailers, in reality, players can choose to not fight so much as to just plant a farm, make some food, keep the colonists alive, negotiate with the sentient aliens, and defend the perimeter from the local life forms. That can still eventually arrive at the ending. And yes, there is an ending. Story mode also features coop with other players.

  • Adventure Mode – This mode is based on a procedural map generated from a seed. Currently, it comes in a 40X40 kilometer map. Players will be able to complete random missions, defeat bosses, and explore different landscapes in the mode and eventually be able to setup conditions that they want to play (such as tower defense or attack an alien camp). This mode will also feature survival gameplay. The randomization in this mode will eventually pull in player made objects and locations so that a world will always feature something new and unique.

  • Build Mode – In this mode, there are no enemies and an infinite amount of building material. It also currently comes in a 40X40km map. Players will be able to build whatever they want in this mode, including everything in the Creations Editor. Think of this as the perfect testing ground to test everything you build. Or…it’s your place to build your garden without ever worrying about the pesky aliens.


Multiplayer allows Local Area Network and player hosted servers. It features several modes but some are still on the drawing board or going through technical trials so the final result is still in flux. Players playing multiplayer should be able to bring at least one of their created objects into multiplayer games, be it a sword, gun, or vehicle.

  • Coop – Coop comes in many selections, such as adventure mode, tower defense mode, build mode, etc. This is pretty much an open world sandbox with a max of 32 players (this number still needs to be stress tested).

  • Versus – This mode allows teams of up to 16 players to battle against 16 players from another team. We allow full terrain manipulation in this mode. Currently, it's a point based system where one team wins if they reach a certain point level based on kills, built objects, resources mined, etc.

Planet Explorers Server Issue Update

Hi everyone,

We've been working hard on getting the network code for multiplayer back online. Due to the server outage, some of the server code base was lost. As we went looking through it, it turns out there was more loss than we anticipated. So it's taking a bit more time to fix it than we expected. But we do have someone working on it and will hopefully have multiplayer back soon. Please stay tuned for further information. Thank you.

Changed the inertance of the default camera to 0(ps: old players need to tweak it yourselves in setting)
Fixed the bug that clicking tower defense button may lead to game crash in single player mode.
Fixed the bug that some materials show wrong number when repairing ISOs.
Fixed the bug that player can accomplish the Counterattack mission in adventure mode by destroying any one of PUJA camps.

Hey all, another patch in coming. We took a look at a lot of the co-op story issues and tried to fix as many as we can.

Fixed the display error of the Mctalk in multiplayer coop
Fixed issue where the Mctalk stays on the ground even after the take-off in multiplayer coop
Adjusted the collision of firebear nest in story mode, so that the firebear will not get stuck
Adjusted the following AI of NPCs, so that they will not teleport to your front
Fixed the issue in multiplayer story mode where the number of monsters and attacks in tower defense missions are different for each player
Fixed the bug that Pajan not showing up in last battle in multiplayer coop
Changed the mission structure of helping colonists to safety for multiplayer coop
Fixed the issue where vertical plane cannot be dragged to the lowest plane in creation system
Added the setting of aim sensitivity in options
Added the setting that players will know which mission they're doing after interacting with NPCs
Added the total bullet number in your bag aside of the existing bullet number in your weapon

Ok, this is a very tiny patch since build 1.1.1, so we'll not change the version number.

In this patch, we fixed the bug that sometimes players cannot export ISOs or update ISOs to workshop in multiplayer.

In this patch, we fixed the bug that sometimes players cannot export ISOs or update ISOs to workshop in multiplayer.

So we've had a couple of staff changes causing a delay of this release, mainly trying to find a mulitplayer programmer. Now that we've finally found one, we're starting our updates again, sorry for the rather long delay.

PE is content complete, but there's a lot of room for better user experience and less bugs, so we'll still be working on that. The next item on the list is to see if we can cut down on the stuttering.

Notice for Restarting the Customized Server

Hey guys, as you already know we have changed our official server in order to have a more smooth gameplay experience. Thus for now the customized server has been temporary shut down. We Will need the host to restart the server, or else other players cannot see it in the server list.

Hey guys, as you already know we have changed our official server in order to have a more smooth gameplay experience. Thus for now the customized server has been temporary shut down. We Will need the host to restart the server, or else other players cannot see it in the server list.

Notice for Official Server Restarting and Resetting

We have been resetting and restarting our official servers without much notice before, and we're very sorry for that. From now on, we plan to regularly restart and reset the official servers from March 31st to make sure they run smoothly, and new players can play from the very beginning of the story.

Reset time: every Thursday morning around 5:00 eastern time

Restart time: the first Thursday of each month around 5:00 eastern time

Please save your buildings and creations in advance so it won't affect your fun in the game. :D

Another update. We didn’t add in the story elements that we wanted, still tweaking some issues with adding in story elements without causing save problems, so hopefully next time. We’re also adding in a music player next time. The 32 bit version is up…but it’s not stable yet, it crashes after about an hour, so we’re still tweaking that as well. Finally, we’ve started on testing out if the player can ride animals…still not sure if it’ll be in, but we have some ideas on how to accomplish it.

How to Add New Translation in Game

We’re opening up the language spreadsheet to players who want to help with the localization of Planet Explorers. Everyone who would like to translate the story or any UI content can edit this sheet. Here is the how-to:

First open Steam. Right click Planet Explorers and choose properties. Click local files tab in the new pop-up window and choose browse local files. Game Description Image

The folder you’ve just opened is where your game is installed. Find the file named i18n. This is the database for all the text in the game. The extension of this file is .db, so you will need the right software to open it. We use SQLite v2.1.Game Description Image

Save and apply all the changes. Now you've finished most of the work, the rest is to load the new spreadsheet in game.

These edited databases will not be attached to the game (the game officially only has English and Chinese), so for anyone who wants the translation to be other than English and Chinese, you will have to download the text databases that other people have shared.

Final 1.0 Released

And here we are, after two and half years in Early Access, we’re finally ready to release the game on Steam. This does not mark the end of development for this title, we will continue to bug fix, tweak, and update this game for at least another half a year, after that it will depend on sales. We plan to continue to add more side stories to both adventure and story mode. We’re also looking into putting in features that were left out of the final build, such as animal riding.

In this build, we’ve opened up the language spreadsheet so that players can do translations into their own languages if they want (and then load that spreadsheet ingame), we’ll talk more about this in a couple of days.

We have found that there have been players who change numbers with a third party software in multiplayer games, giving them the ability to one hit kill other players. So, we added an anti-cheating mechanism. When we detect cheaters, he or she will be kicked from the game. If this persists for 3 times, he or she will be banned from multiplayer and reported to Steam. This is a new feature that we hastily put together, so we do need a lot of community input on if this is the right way to go and if it’s fair for everyone involved.

We’re also in the process of pushing out a demo for new players and the OST for tomorrow (or whenever Steam approves). The OST’s a DLC and will cost $3.99 on Steam. The 32 bit version of the game will be later this week or next.

Finally, we want to thank everyone who’s been with us throughout Early Access, without you, we wouldn’t have been able to be where we are today. There were a lot of rough spots throughout development, but we tried our hardest to make the game as well as we can make it. We hope you’ll enjoy it.

Beta 0.9 Released

And here we are, at beta 0.9, the game’s basically asset complete. We will now be aiming to get this game out in final form on November 7th. We wish we had more time in Early Access, but we’ve been in here a long time, and people are getting impatient (players, investors, development staff, you name it). Of course, final doesn’t mean the end of updates, far from it! That’ll be saved for another news post on our post-final plans. But right now, for the next couple of weeks it’ll be tweaks, bug fixes, polish, and more tweaks.

In general, we have gotten crash bugs down to a minimum (we’ve only received 5 new ones since the last build, and they were fixed). If you’re crashing to desktop, we will need you to submit your output log to us to figure out why it happened.

For Kickstarter supporters, we added your names into the game at all the crashed ships. You’re listed as Star X Corporation employees, who made the colony mission to Maria possible. The in game armor and weapon sets are done but we’re still working on the code, so you’ll get them next time.

Also, please, please, please(!) spread the word that Planet Explorers is hitting final. Tell your family and friends, Youtubers, news portals, message boards, everyone! We need all the help we can get since we sort of stayed off the grid during much of development. The sales of this game pretty much feeds our studio and all of our future games.

Beta 0.8 Released

We’ve spent the last two weeks furiously fixing and tweaking stuff. Now that we’re not focusing on adding stuff, fixing and tweaking issues has become a lot easier. The new crash reporting function has helped us a lot. We’ve found that more than half of the bugs we’ve received are due to players loading old incompatible saves in adventure mode. As you know, we’re changing adventure mode with every build, so its saves are not safe until final. We do need everyone’s help in going through Story mode, we’re going through it everyday, but since it takes 15 hours at the fastest for a run through, finding bugs there is slow going. Our next build will be next week.

ISO Design Contest Result

Hey guys,

Finally, here comes the result list for the ISO design contest. We’ve got a lot of designs coming from players all over the world. Now we selected 20 ISOs as templates in our creation system tutorial. We need these template SIMPLE and WITHOUT using any customized materials or textures. So if you are not in the list, please don’t feel sorry about it. It doesn’t mean your work is not good, it’s just they are too fancy to be the template in the tutorial…

As promised, we will send out email along with steam keys to the players below (one steam key for one template). And we’ll also list your name in the game credit. So please keep an eye on your mailbox/message box.

Beta 0.7 Released

We’ve added the final large new feature to the game in this build, which is the adventure single player mainline story addition. Players of course can ignore it and do what they have been doing in Adventure mode all along. Besides the storyline, we’ve also added new sidequests and enemy states to this mode. Now, this isn’t something complicated like in Civilization, but you will be able to destroy enemy towns or make peace with them. Some features are still missing (such as making peace) and will be in in the next build. All replication scripts have been taken out, so players will need to find them by doing missions or hit the dungeons. Also in this build, we’ve tweaked the strength of some of the boss animals, they’re probably a little too hard now. But please try it out and give us some feedback. We’re done adding in any major new features, so what awaits are tweaks (balance, animation, control, UI, player accessibility), bug fixes, and small additions (like more ambient sounds and npc sounds). We’re going through all the suggestions and feedback from players and will try to polish the game as much as possible before release.

Beta 0.6 Released!

We ran into some issues while adding a storyline to the adventure mode, so that has been pushed to the next build, again. But we’re getting pretty close there. Game balancing is also being focused on for the next build. For this build, we’ve fixed a lot of bugs, added some new things, and tweaked a bunch. The biggest change is with the replicator. We’re trying to separate the handheld replicator with the colony one. So that means we’re fine tuning the replication speed. The colony replicator with workers will be much, much faster than the handheld, this is still being worked on for the next build, so it’s not completely in yet. We hope to hear some feedback on this topic. Next build will be out next Friday-ish.

This build came out a little earlier than expected, because we pushed the adventure mode and balancing changes to the next build, due to several issues in story that just couldn’t wait (namely the Allen Carter getting ported back to the colony issue at the Martian colony). We also did some tweaking to the start of the story mode so that players can get into the groove of the game much faster (by having Gerdy give out the bow and arrow and Allen give out a motorbike). Next build should be out around the 14th.

For the next build, we’ll start the comprehensive balance tweaks and adventure mode storyline, it should be out around September 5th. We’re also looking at how to get the game working correctly in 4K, we finally got a 4K monitor in the studio.

As you may know, we are about to launch the final in the next month. And for the final version of our game, we are gonna need a bunch of ISOs as defaulted templates in the creation system. And we need your imagination to create some simple but nice items for us.

Equipment: Sword, Shield, Gun, Bow, Axe
Carrier: Small Vehicle, Large Vehicle, Helicopter, Battleship, Boat
Object: tiny (fine, rough), small (fine, rough), large (fine, rough)
Armor: head, body, arm and leg, hand and foot, decoration
Robot (fine, rough)
AI Turret

Please choose one of above type to create. If you prefer to make an object, or a robot, please do create both fine and rough ones (the fine and the rough will not require exact the same, but should look similar).

Rewards:
1. If your work has been chosen, you will get a steam key as reward. If you provided us multiple ISOs, and more than one of your pieces got chosen, then you will get more than one steam key (one steam key for one ISO).
2. The author will be also named in the credit list.

Requirements:
1. Please keep the item as simple as possible.
2. For the equipment that are made of the same materials, please keep their attack level and the defense level consistence.
3. Please do not place weapons on the carrier.
4. Please do not use customized materials or textures.
5. ISO shall not contain illegal content.
6. Please do not copy other people's design or the existing design.
7. You can add description or your signature in the ISO.

Beta 0.1 Released

It has been a long road, but we've finally entered beta. What beta means for us is that all the major technical and artistic assets are in game, it does not mean we're only going to balance and bug fix from now on. There are still much left to do. Some key items on our to do list during the beta:

Ingame aid - something like the Word paperclip, optional but should be very helpful for new players.
Adventure storyline - we'll be adding in a more mission based system to the adventure mode that ties up all the gameplay elements.
AI tweaks and additions - there are still several species and behaviors to be added, also lots of balancing to do.
Storyline tweaks - adding in more cutscenes and more animation to bring the story to life, also balancing.
Optimization - optimize the game where ever possible.
Balancing gameplay - tweaks on animation, damage, hp, armor, defense, where to buy stuff, etc.
Animation - polishing up animation
Make ISO site - attempt to make an official download site for ISOs.
Bugs - terminate all bugs.
32 bit - Make the game run decent enough on a 32 bit machine.

Our beta will not last long, we should be out of it in 1-2 months. Does beta mean that saves will be protected? For story mode, yes. For adventure, no. A0.97 Released !

We’re getting ever closer to the beta build. We are currently aiming to get into beta on July 18th and have the final build by mid to late August. In this current build, we’ve finished up the mainline storyline, you can go all the way from start to finish. It’s not polished yet, so for the people waiting to get into the story, please wait a bit more. We’re still adding in bits and pieces of the side quests.

For the next build, the focus for us is to better lead players into the game. We’re finding that a lot of players have little idea what to do once in the game, so they never get to the point of actually discovering all the systems. We see too many telling us that the game doesn’t have much content, which has us doing a lot of head scratching. Another major thing we’re work on is the linking up of the comfort, strength, animation speed, weapon weight, weapon types, armor types (and perhaps temperature) systems, this will solve several problems that you guys have mentioned before, such as players not using all the weapons and armor or jumping directly to the one with the most ATK or HP. We are also adding more code for NPC behavior when in battle, such as maybe a follower with a start up knife shouldn’t be waving it at a giant robot.

Here’s a new poster, once we hit beta, this will become the new image for the game on Steam.

A0.96 Released

Hey everyone, we’re now up to a0.96, sorry for the delay, but there were several last minute problems. We wanted to get the story done in this build, but due to some asset delays, that’ll be pushed to a0.97. We did add in a lot of story content. We’ve also added in a new dungeon system to the Adventure map. We plan to use player made ISOs directly from the Workshop as treasures in these random dungeons. Speaking of the Workshop, we redid the programming for it with better compression, it’s now much faster when loading and has more options in search. The bad news is that it’s now reset, so the old ISOs will need to be uploaded again (they’re still there on the Workshop, just that the browser is only displaying the new ones). Another major change is the separation of tools and weapons, axes and knifes will stop being dual use equipment. Instead, they will become tools only. This change was made so that we can separate out the functions for every key. Finally, we also added in a disease system where the player can get sick from the elements of nature, such as staying in the rain for too long without the proper clothing, or out in the desert sun for too long without the proper clothing, or eating too much and becoming obese. This system is still unfinished as we haven’t added in the clothing functions yet.

For the next build, we’re going to get the completion of story, new cg intro, new terrain changes, new mineral deposits, and more. Coming around early June. For a look at the cg opening, check out these screens:

For this build, we continued our quest for feature completion. There was a delay of a week due to several bugs. We’ve added in more behaviors for animals and packs, as well as new animations (most likely some bugs). We’ve also added in more story pieces. We’ll try to finish out the main story by next build in early to mid-May. We tweaked a lot of the gameplay. We figured out some of the reasons why players couldn’t hit animals very well in melee and went about changing them. We’ve also tried to simplify controls where possible. Finally, we’ve tweaked the Adventure Mode terrain, hopefully, people will like this version better.

A0.94 Update Released

In this build, we focused on AI attack behavior and the new and Adventure mode terrain rendering (work in progress, some places are sorta flat). We also made it possible for executing custom stories ingame, so now players can make story based custom maps. This is still the basic version with bugs, so we look forward to players giving us feedback regarding the editor and its execution. We also started our optimization of the garbage collection problem, there’s some minor optimization with terrain rendering, that should make the stuttering happen farther apart. We’ve found that most of the stuttering happen while Unity is clearing terrain memory, so we’ll be optimizing that from now on. We hope to see improvement by the next build in early April. We ran through and fixed most of the storyline bugs, players should be able to go all the way to the Negotiations mission now. Starting with the next build, we’ll be adding a lot animation and missions to the storyline. We’ll try to be story complete by a0.96.

A0.93 Build Released

Hey everyone, we’re getting closer and closer to beta. In this build, we mostly fixed a lot of the NPC behavior problems. We also moved the game up to Unity 5.24, which should fix some of the vehicle physics problems. We went about fixing most of the story related bugs, so players should be able to play through what we have right now. We’re trying to wrap up the story before beta. For the next build, which will be around mid-March, we’ll be focusing on AI groups and AI behavior, Adventure mode features, as well as the World Editor along with its story editor.

A0.889 Beta Build Released on Steam

We’re getting into the final month before the a0.9 update. Lots of things to do and build, but overall, we’re getting ever closer. In this build, the biggest update is the ability to export custom armor. There are still some small problems here and there, but overall it works pretty well. We’ll be adding in custom armor stats over the next few updates. We’ve also gave aerial enemies a lot more punch. In the next build, we’ll also try to give you a look at co-op story mode, as well as more robot bosses.

We waited a couple of weeks for Unity to fix a crash bug in 5.2, but it’s still not released yet, so we’ll just go ahead and release the current build rolled back to 5.0. This build added several things that players have been looking forward to, the most important being the first person view. This isn’t complete yet in this build, we’ll still be adding in first person specific animation in future builds. Next we’ve added back in the bird enemies with new behavior and animation, again, this isn’t complete, we have a lot more behavior sets and animations to add. It does give you a pretty good idea where birds will end up. With birds in the game, we’re almost done streamlining the storyline to where we can start adding in new missions and contents. We’re still on course to have a0.9 out by late November.

This one took us a while, there were several bugs and efficiency problems forcing our attention. We fixed the cave pathfinding and NPC generation causing frame drops, and there are several more areas that we plan to look at to solve other stuttering issues. One major concern is that our current pathfinding is not only pretty bad, it’s also very resource intensive. We’re going about writing a whole new pathfinding system for our game, we can’t promise it’ll solve all the problems with AI, but it’ll be much better than what’s there now. For our next build, we’ll have new air enemy combat behavior, the medical facility for colony, most of the old animals back in, custom armor, NPC skills, and maybe an early form of first person camera. Added custom armor creation in the Creation Editor (cannot export yet)

A0.886 Beta Build Released on Steam

We tried to get a couple of things into this build but failed, so they're for the next build. First is the (optional) level up skill tree for Adventure mode, second are several new weapon parts for the Creation Editor. At the end of this build, we ran into a few problems with AI pathfinding optimization, that's what caused the delay. The problem still persists in the form of frame rate drops when loading AI, we're going to fix that in the next build.

A lot of players have asked us about when we're moving forward with the story. Well, we're actually mainly focused on the story, it's just that there are so many moving parts and the story mode is the culmination of these parts. Once we have most of the AI and special events written completely, then story will go from start to finish without a hitch. The end part of the story needs new AI systems or they won't work (you know, the part about befriending or warring against...). Due to the AI being a bottleneck for our game, we've already put 3.5 programmers on this task.

For the next build, we're going to put in more animals, flying AI, better NPC AI, level up skill tree, updated battle/hit system, and perhaps an early form of the custom armor. Speaking of custom armor, here's a preview:
