Explore

Discover many distinct biomes filled with unique locations and wildlife. Explore overgrown ruins, or take on a deadly temple to find the treasure hidden within. Descend down abandoned mineshafts or winding caverns and uncover the secrets they hold.

Encounter

Use the fully destructible world to your advantage in emergent encounters with a wide variety of bosses and monsters. Collapse the roof of a cave onto your foes or destroy a tree to have it fall onto an dangerous monster. Blow a hole in a wall to get the drop on your enemies.

Fight

Wield a wide variety of powerful weapons to defeat your foes and loot for new weapons and gear. Get up close and personal with an array of melee weapons or strike from afar with your arsenal of ranged armaments. Maybe you will learn and master the arcane arts and use magic to fell your enemies.

Build

Create anything from the simplest of homes to a magnificent castle. Use the full power of a voxel based building system to build anything your heart desires. Sculpt the terrain and unleash your creativity.

Improved Voxel Simulations

Hi Steam Community,

The voxel simulation system has been completely refactored and is now much more performant. The simulations now also have in increased speed and look much more natural. Moving sand now makes sounds and can hurt you or enemies if they become buried.

Combat and Animation Improvements, New Magic Spells, New Building Materials

Hi Steam Community,

Sorry for the lack of updates. I've been hard at work on the game and progress has been steady. Here's some of what I've been working on with more to come.

Combat and Animation Improvements

Melee Combat now has an improved feel and better fluidity. Many of the animations for the Player and for Creatures have been improved. You can now move and change spells/off hand items at the same time keeping the flow of combat going. Combat now is also a bit easier in general now but can still be challenging.

New Spells

There are 2 new spells to find and unlock. The Shield Spell creates a forcefield of magical energy keeping out projectiles/attackers allowing you to heal and attack safely from inside the shield. The Detonate spell fires an explosive magical projectile that destroys everything in an area. It is especially useful for blowing holes in walls.

New Building Materials

A few new building materials have been added. As highly requested there is now a set of Concrete materials of various colors that feature a fairly uniform texture. You can now also craft Mud Bricks from Mud increasing the variety of brick colors in the game.

Visual and Performance Improvements

Level of Detail fading has been added to reduce visual pop-in during traversal. This significantly improves the experience of moving throughout the world and improves immersion. This update also brings many performance optimizations. The games GPU VRAM usage has been significantly reduces and memory bandwidth usage reduced. There have also been a number of optimizations on the CPU side as well.

Weapon Upgrading

Hi Steam Community,

I've added Weapon Upgrading to the game. Weapons are upgraded using gems found throughout the world. Each different type of gem gives a unique effect ranging from higher attack speed to setting enemies on fire.

Building Improvements and Controller Support

Hey Steam Community,

Progress has been steady over the past month or so. Here's some of what I've been working on.

Building UI Improvements

The entire Building UI has been overhauled and now uses a radial menu system. Shapes now use a physicalized gizmo system for adjusting their parameters/positioning.

Building Prefabs/Shapes can now be rotated on any axis using the new Building Transform UI. Prefabs also can be flipped/mirrored on any axis.

Custom prefabs can now be sorted into categories. The categories correspond to the folders inside the CustomPrefabs folder. You can move prefabs into different folders to change their category.

Controller Support

The game now has full controller support. The entire game can now be played with a controller and all the UI can be navigated with one. Any controller supported natively on windows should work out of the box.

Caves

Hey Steam Community,

Caves have been added to the game. You will be able to find entrances to these labyrinthian caverns dotted around the landscape. They provide easy access to ores and other resources.

Each biome has its own unique cave biome.

Crystal Caves

Found in the Mystical Forest these caves feature large glowing crystals of various vibrant colors.

Lost Caves

Found in the Outback Canyons these sandstone caves feature frequent pockets and pillars of sand/gravel, vines hanging from the ceiling and the dry remnants of long dead vegetation.

Wet Caves

Found in the Mushroom Swamp these caves are filled with roots, vines, frequent pools of water and various plants that have made this damp environment their home.

New Interaction System

Hey Steam Community,

I've overhauled the interaction system in the game. You now physically interact with objects such as campfires, anvils etc to perform actions instead of using a generic UI system.

I have also made some usability improvements to the crafting system to reduce the number of actions needed to craft items.

Horses

Hey Steam Community,
I'm going to be posting shorter, more focused and more frequent updates from now on instead of one big update every so often.

I have been working on a lot of new stuff beyond what's in this post. Ill have more to show soon.

Horses are coming to the game. Soon you'll be able to traverse the world with your 4 legged companion. They can be tamed with food such as carrots or grass and can be given a name when tamed.

Dev Update: New Enemies, Magic Spells, Weapons and Locations

Hi Steam Community,
I've been hard at work filling out the Mushroom Swamp biome with content. Here's a look at what I've been working on.

Structures

There are 6 new structures to discover and loot in the Mushroom Swamp. These range from abandoned towers to run down cottages and all contain valuable items for you to discover. The new structures are:
  • Encampment Ruins
  • Enchanted Tower Ruins
  • Fisherman's Hut
  • Gatehouse Ruins
  • Mystical Cottage Ruins
  • Shrine Ruins

Enemies

There are 4 new enemies in the game that can be found in the Mushroom Swamp.

Acid Blob

Look out these nasty dudes have a gross habit of vomiting balls of acid on unsuspecting adventurers.

Centipede

Watch your step. These nasty critters are easily hidden by the forest floor and love hiding in dark places. Their bite can leave lasting effects.

Reclaimed

These undead creatures, reanimated by the swamp itself can wield a variety of weapons including Hammers, Poison Gas Bombs and Bows.

Shroomling

Dont let their unassuming demeanor fool you. Look out, hes got a knife. Also, that big bouncy head isn't just for show.

Spells

Acid Ball

This projectile spell leaves an acidic residue on impact which can deal damage over time.

Lightning Bolt

This powerful beam spell deals high damage and can chain to nearby enemies or to you if youre not careful ;)

Weapons

Silver Weapon Set

Silver weapons are the new highest tier. They can be found in the Mushroom Swamp and deal more damage and can remove more voxels.

Poison Gas Bomb

Throw to release a toxic cloud of gas on impact.

Artifacts

Jar of Fireflies

This jar of little critters when equipped will light up the darkness.

Lead Glove

This heavy glove will increase the knockback of your melee attacks when equipped.

Dev Update: The Mushroom Swamp

Hi Steam Community,
Let me start off by introducing myself for those who do not know me. I'm Tooley1998 and I am the developer of Lay of the Land. I have been creating games since 2014 and I have been working on Lay of the Land for at least 3 years.

I am going to start posting development updates to the games steam page to help keep everyone informed with the games progress who may not be following me on my social media pages. You can find those here if you're interested.

I know many of you are eagerly awaiting news on the Steam release date for the game. While I am not ready to reveal a date just yet I will have more to say in the coming months.

Anyway enough rambling from me here is a summary for some of the recent additions to the game.


Mushroom Swamp Biome

In this dark and gloomy biome you'll find ponds filled with lily pads cascading down into streams. Huge fig trees loom overhead with giant mushrooms and vines underneath. Dense vegetation litters the ground. I wonder what kinds of creatures, nasty and nice will call this place home.

New Animals

There are two new animals you can find in the Mushroom Swamp. The Hippo and the Anteater. Hippos love chilling out in ponds and looking for some tasty grass to eat. Anteaters like to spend their days searching the forest floor for their next meal.

New Building Materials

With the new fig trees comes a new wood type: Fig Logs and Fig Planks. The giant mushrooms are the source of a few new building materials. Their caps are bouncy and their glowing undersides can be dyed a variety of colors to light up your builds.

Improved World Generation

The world asset placement system as been completely overhauled. Objects like trees, logs, rocks and more should now look much more natural. Terrain now should also blend better between biomes.

Peaceful Game Mode

I have added a peaceful game mode with no hostile creatures for those who just want to explore, build and chill.
