V-Shift is a high-intensity, fast paced battle platformer where mastering your movement is key to victory. Choose your champion, battle against other players and become the ultimate gladiator in a galaxy-wide alien arena. Master the V-Shift: velocity is damage; stillness is death.

Game Mechanics

V-Shift: Through constant movement, players are charging their V-Shift, an ability to redirect their momentum into any given direction. This mechanic allows players to make quick movements, inflict massive damage on their enemies, or even increase their hit range.

Character Selection: A roster of 4 unique and diverse characters to choose from, each with their own unique abilities and playstyle.

  • The Chronomancer: A broken time traveler set on stopping the Herald... corrupted by the world's end... suffers constant pain and decay...

  • The Herald: A fallen knight... resurrected by the eldritch beast Uhn' Gauzar... now a husk of armor housing a deadly amalgam...

  • The Fool: Marinates in bloody fun and chaos... absolutely no cares in the world... hahahaahaa...

  • The Liars: A terrifyingly brutal and experienced brawler... part of an alien race characterized by multiple faces... craves domination over others by any means...

Movement: Players run and jump to interact with level objects that affect their movement, such as using portals, jump pads, or rails. As a player builds up momentum through movement, they are “charging” up their V-Shift action.

  • Portals - Transport players from one part of the level to another instantly.

  • Jump Pads - Boosts the player in the direction of the jump pad.

  • Rails -  Automate movement and momentum building for a player across a specific path.

  • Speed boosts - Sudden increase in speed

Attacking: Players use melee attacks to both damage and knock back enemies on hit. With a set range, the power of the attack is connected to how fast the player is currently going. Therefore players are encouraged to build their speed and then attack for maximum damage.

Special Abilities: Generally offensive in nature (with one exception), they provide an alternate way to deal damage and introduce variety and complexity to battles.

  • REWIND (The Chronomancer): Retrace your steps and rewind back into a previous state in time, maintaining agency and physical presence in the process.

  • JOUST (The Herald): Become a powerful lance, allowing for repeated piercing thrusts into enemies if successfully landed.

  • ABYSS (The Fool): Toss an unassuming object that ruptures space and creates a deadly interdimensional rift, causing all caught in its reach to become no more.

  • GRAB (The Liars): Grab and throw nearby opponents, causing massive crash damage if they collide with terrain at high speeds.

Utility Abilities: Geared towards giving you an advantage over your opponent but generally don't do any damage themselves.

  • SLOW FIELD (The Chronomancer): Bends nearby spacetime, slowing all who enter the field.

  • SHIELD (The Herald): Summons a spirit shield nearby, providing more opportunities for cornering enemies and traversing areas.

  • GOO BALL (The Fool): Sends forth a slow-moving glob of goo that stuns and pops enemies upward, exploding into a rain of sticky goo.

  • SCREAM (The Liars): Cry a deathly metallic tone, inflicting a paralytic fear in all who bear witness.

Modes

Battle: Host or join public or private online matches in lobbies of up to 4 players.

Training: Battle offline against bots. Bot difficulty can be set to easy, medium, hard, or dummy (if you want to just practice your combos).

Mode Rules: These are the rules of battle, available in both Battle and Training.

  • GLADIATOR RUSH: Deal as much damage in a given time period. Kills grant you BONUS points. (This mode encourages players to be involved and active in battle. Going on the offensive to accumulate points or maintaining distance to keep the lead are both valid strategies.)

v1.1 Major Update

Hello V-Shifters! Thank you for your patience with this update. After much insightful feedback and several beta tests later, we are ready to release v1.1 of V-Shift! There are many major additions in this update which we hope you'll enjoy as much as we enjoyed working on it. From the charming yet voracious new character The Princess to the new Team Battles mode, there is much new content to sink your teeth into.

Also, join the V-Shift discord here if you'd like to find other V-Shifters, provide feedback or just to keep up to date with the game. Happy V-Shifting!

MAJOR CHANGES

New Character: The Princess

  • That's right!! The Princess is out now! Chomp away as the Clam [strike]Queen[/strike] Princess herself!!
  • Her special ability allows her to morph into her true Clam form chomping down on her prey using directional keys.
  • Her utility ability is a classic parry indicated by her clam dogs circling her in guard mode.

New Game Mode: Team Battles

  • Ever wanted to team up with your friend(s) in V-Shift? Want no more! Battle alongside or against your friends in a tag team twist on the classic Gladiator Rush.
  • A blue colored triangle will be spawned over your teammate!

Trails and New Progression System

  • Earn new cosmetic trails through the new leveling system!
  • Use the new collection menu to view what trails you unlock as you level and see what a certain character and trail combination would look like before entering the battlefield!
  • Enemy trails can be turned off via the settings menu.

Wall Bounce Mechanic

  • You can now wall bounce! This mechanic reads input from the jump button so if you have it held while hitting a wall you will bounce in the opposite direction!

Updated Camera System

  • Environmental cameras in The Tower and The Ship that lock the position to a predefined area during specific level events.
  • Adjustable camera deadzones, zoom and snap options!

Practice Map

  • We have moved the "try other character" portion of the tutorial to a new map called Practice!
  • Some say that Lenny lurks here so try your best to defeat his warriors!
  • Checkpoint orbs can also be collected here to your hearts content!

1 Oneway Platforms

  • There are now one way platforms! Hold down and press the jump button to pass through them.

CHAMPION CHANGES

Herald

  • No changes!

Liars

  • We know Liars fans have been WAITING for this one! Liars scream wind up has gone from 1.5s -> .5s and her grab radius has gone from .6 units -> .93 units!!

Fool

  • You can now pop goo balls with melee attacks!
  • Fixed grenade knockback, so you can smack the grenade with melee attacks.

Chronomancer

  • Rewind trail is now visible to all players and is even color coded based off if he is a teammate or an enemy!

LEVEL CHANGES

General

  • Added optional environmental camera to all stages! To turn them on, go to the settings menu.

Tower

  • During the closing of the tower, a forced environmental camera triggers for all players!

Ship

  • The Ship now has a flashing indicator when a part of it is about to explode!
  • During the last event when there is only one part of the ship left, a forced environmental camera triggers for all players!

Mini Pit

  • Currently only available in trial #23 Mini Pit Showdown. We're hoping to revamp our level select menu in a future update to add it there, so stay tuned!

Tutorial

  • Adjusted the tutorial to account for the new mechanics.
  • Environmental camera for the final bot fight.

TRIAL CHANGES

5 New Trials

  • #17 Lance Party: Parry as many Harold lances as you can as The Princess!
  • #19 Bonds: Battle with another and win in the new Team Battles!
  • #20 Kill Swap: Change champions every kill!
  • #22 Fool's Errand: Chase down checkpoint orbs while evading attacks!

Changes to other trials

  • #6 Dummy Dash: Now an actual dummy spawns in instead of character dummies.
  • The Princess will now spawn in for trials that have random character selection!

OTHER ADDITIONS

Gameplay

  • When in a bot match with only dummy bots, a dummy manager menu now pops up that allows you to configure how the dummies behave!
  • Infinite timer option!
  • Bot melee attack sizes should now be consistent with the player.

Graphics

  • V-Shift charge particles can be seen by others in multiplayer.

  • New collections menu in the main menu with various trail unlocks at different levels.
  • Moved the credits menu to the settings.
  • Settings are now adjustable ingame!
  • New options to turn on/off hit/hurtbox visuals.
  • Added a "Restart Trials" button.
  • Control inputs are now displayed on the character descriptions.
  • Player health bars are now green!
  • Your in game name is set to your Steam display name! (just like any other Steam game!)
  • Added a word filter to lobby names.
  • Added a trials counter for keeping track of completed trials.
  • Added a cool fire effect for completing all trials.
  • Disabled abilities now shown on HUD.

Misc

  • Game lobbies make sure you're on the same game version as the host before connecting!

BUG FIXES

  • Quick rematch now chooses the correct map instead of always choosing The Pit.
  • Ingame hp bar now properly shows ability inputs for controller.
  • Fixed an issue where players would sometimes spawn incorrectly in The Ship.
  • Set the color of the background to be black in certain scenes that were blue.
  • Knockback is fixed with grenades. They can now be smacked around.
  • Made it less likely to be crushed by lag in multiplayer.
  • Fixed a bug where looping audio would continue in the End Menu after the match.
  • Fixed relative leaderboard not being centered to the player's score.
  • Fixed an issue where players would stay "wavy" after being hit sometimes.
  • Very likely more than what is here...

Notes

  • We are aware of an issue for Macs where after closing the game it sometimes generates a crash report. It shouldn't affect the game when being played, but we are actively looking into fixes for this.
  • There are currently 2 locked trials in the game: #18 Castle Showdown and #21 Gouge. These both take place in the new map The Castle, but the map is still in development so we decided to lock the challenges for now!

Devlog #1: The Future of V-Shift & Vote on the Next Fighter!

Hi everyone!

We wanted to write this devlog to share our experience showcasing V-Shift at the Game Developers Conference and, more importantly, to talk about the future of V-Shift moving forward. We also have an exciting announcementwere letting YOU decide the next playable character in V-Shift!

The entire team had a blast in San Francisco, and we want to thank everyone who played our game at GDC. Hearing people say they loved a project weve worked so hard on over the past six months was incredibly encouraging. All the feedback we received was much appreciated and serves as the driving force behind what well be discussing.

Game Direction

Now, lets dive into the heart of the devlogthe future of V-Shift! While the game is a solid proof of concept for the fast-paced, action-packed multiplayer experience we set out to create, we realized it needs some directional changes to truly reach its full potentiala V-Shift for V-Shift, if you will.

More specifically, we see two main directions the game could take:
  • Enhancing online multiplayer by implementing dedicated, non-client-hosted matches.
  • Leaning into local couch multiplayer for a more casual, party-style experience.

The first option would require significant reengineering of our current netcode, along with server costs on a national (and potentially international) scale as we work to localize the game. However, the upside would be a more competitive online experience with no reliance on host connections, eliminating host advantage.

The second option moves V-Shift in a more casual direction, making it fully playable with friends on a single device. This would involve changes to the games input system since it would be primarily played with controllers. Given our interest in eventually porting to the Nintendo Switch, wed also explore a streamlined control scheme that works even with a single joystick, like on a Joy-Con.

After gathering feedback from playtesters and discussing our options internally, weve decided to push toward local play! We truly believe this direction will open the most doors for us and cement V-Shift as the ultimate destroy your friends party game.

That said, we want to assure our players that nothing from the current game is being removed! While well be experimenting with new combat systems and controller layouts, we currently have no plans to replace the existing combat and controls of classic V-Shift. If any changes are made, we still plan to save this current version of V-Shift for posterity, so if you love how the game plays now, theres no need to worry.

Vote on the Next Character!

Were excited to announce that a new challenger will be joining the V-Shift roster, and YOU will get to decide who (or what) it is! Lets meet the possible warriors:

The Princess: A child princess from an ocean realm who commands the dogs by her side to do damage on her behest. Her body is made of shell, which she can morph at will. She can turn herself inside out and change form into a large, snapping clam.Game Description Image

The Punisher: A beefy warrior constantly afflicted with pain. Poisonous blood runs through her veins, but she can release it in a deadly burst upon retracting armored spikes into her flesh.Game Description Image

The Beast: A speedy, snake-like beast. She's one to fear, able to slice, dice, or maul her enemies to death with either dual-wielded blades or razor-sharp teeth.Game Description Image

The Wraith: This combatant doesn't need any weapon besides his massive claws. Watch for the skiesthe fleshy, bat-like creature can soar down and tear the head right off your body.Game Description Image

Voting will take place in the V-Shift Discord server, so be on the lookout for the official poll! Join the V-Shift Discord!
Thanks again for all your supportwere excited to bring you the best V-Shift experience possible!

Trials and Triumphs Patch

First off, a huge thank you to everyone who has played and supported V-Shift so far! Were excited to announce that we will be at the Game Developers Conference this week! So if you happen to be going, find us in the Indie Expo from March 19th - 21st.

As we continue to refine and expand V-Shift, we're making a small change: The game is now priced at $1.99. This small cost helps support ongoing development and future updatesbut dont worry, if you already own V-Shift, you wont need to pay anything! Anyone who grabbed the game while it was free will keep it forever at no additional cost. Along with this, a demo version of our game will be available on our itch.io page here .

Whether youve been with us from the start or are just jumping in now, were incredibly grateful for your support. Now, lets dive into the latest update!

New Features

  • TRIALS MODE! Think you've mastered V-Shift? Think again! Take on 16 unique challenges that remix classic gameplay mechanics in creative and chaotic ways. Rack up points, push your limits, and climb to the top of both Steam friend and global leaderboards!
  • EXTRAS MENU! Go behind the scenes of V-Shift with a treasure trove of concept art, level mock-ups, and early designs that helped shape the game. See how it all came together!

Balance Adjustments
  • Herald Buff The Joust ability is a devastating tool in the right hands, but its 1-second charge-up time made it too slow for the fast-paced nature of V-Shift. We're dramatically reducing the charge-up time to make Herald a true force on the battlefield.
    Joust initial charge-up time: 1s 0.1s
  • Chronomancer Buff Rewinding time is cool, but what if it also hurt your enemies? Now, rewinding through an enemy will deal damage and knock them into the air. Bonus: this can trigger multiple times on the same enemy if you pass through them repeatedly!
    Rewind damage: 0 50
    Knockup strength: 0 10
  • Liars Buff The Scream ability wasnt hitting as hard as it shouldespecially since it roots you in place while charging up. Were making it last four times longer and removing the line of sight check so enemies will truly feel the fear!
    Fear duration: 0.5s 2s
    Removed line of sight check
  • Fool Nerf The Fools grenade has been a hot topic since release. While we love its power fantasy, were adjusting it to give players more chances to dodge it before impact.
    Rift grow time: 1s 2s

Bug Fixes
  • Liars will no longer accidentally scare themselves.
  • UI button animations have been cleaned up and polished.
  • Fixed typos in character descriptions and the stats menu.
  • Lance Master & Model Student Steam achievements should now unlock properly.
  • Resolved an issue where audio was doubling in some parts of the game.
