I havent moaned about Valve being lax on Deck Verified for a while so here we are, #Kena on #SteamDeck is a mess out of the box even though its Verified. Thankfully through plenty of testing, heres a suggested config for you to get it playable and some gameplay. I saw someone on the subreddit mention that increasing the amount of VRAM/UMA to 4 GB in the deck's BIOS menu fixes or at least improves the stuttering.

@@DavideDavini So, I just retested. Turned it up to High Graphics, but I left the dynamic resolution on at a target of 60 fps... I got a pretty steady 45. There wasn't any performance hitches that affected game play.

@@gamingonlinux The big issue I saw was disabling the dynamic resolution. Even modern consoles just do that for you. I set the target to 60 FPS. I think I MAY have turned it down to low graphics and DX12. I think I dipped into the low 50s/upper 40s FPS in that same boss battle.

Well, this game annoyingly doesn't have a slider but only set values like 30, 60 etc. So rather than forcing 30, i prefer to get that bit extra for the frametiming and input lag so limit the deck to 40 or 45.

Having a lower target FPS can help with reaching that FPS, improve frame time consistency, and make FPS drops stand out a bit less if the drop is nearer to your lower target than 60 or whatever it was before

you'd be surprised what having the fps and screen refresh rate match does. I find myself lowering it to 40hz, 40fps even if a game will do 60 just because it's big battery life gains

I had to cap my Cyberpunk 2077 at 30 and everybody seems to not care. There isn't much you can do.

I have a theory because this is been happening to a lot of major publisher games. I have the fear that money may have changed hands to place that green check mark. Although I want to believe valve would never do that it is possibility

Nah, I think it just means Valve's verification testing is not as thorough nor as strict as they claim it is. They're also seemingly very bad at going back and retesting unsupported titles.

Who "verifies" games on steam deck? Or what happens in that process? I doubt its a person or people playing the game through in the Valve offices. I would imagine its a process the developers do themselves and in those cases you are going to get people not doing a good job.

Remember to restart Kena: Bridge of Spirits for the changes to take effect. Due to the dynamic resolution, I recommend turning on motion blur, although this is your individual choice. It will reduce artifacts resulting from image scaling. Also don't use the Framelimiter from SteamOS UI, use only the refresh rate and set to 40.

I'm never tired of saying the Steam Deck "Verified" program is a joke with games which crash every few hours or without any gamepad support at all. Game defaults causing bad performance is the lesser of its problems tbh.

Turn off dynamic resolution, that's the reason. It looks great at native resolution and a mix of medium, high and low settings.

I still find it amazing that Unreal Engine 4 still has massive stutters. Like Star Wars The Fallen Order, massive I/O stutters ALL THE TIME. The Steam Deck actually help a lot of Unreal Engine games with its shader cache, but yeah. Unreal Engine works great on consoles but has always been a hot mess on PC. It's a shame Kena is performing... weirdly.... but it will likely always have the characteristic stutters of the Unreal Engine.

I just started Jedi Fallen Order on my desktop (also Linux), and I was surprised at all the shader cache stuttering. It was really obvious that was the issue I was seeing. It's mostly during the 'cut scene' type parts, but it is a bit annoying. Is it just as bad on Windows?

It's a good game, I played with wine on my arch. But yes, it demands. With my old gf660 was almost unplayable (sub 10 fps I think). It's incredible that can run on small device that this. I only found a small problem when played. In one instance, much further on the game, it always crashed with directx12. Change to11, pass the section and it works.

Switch to directx12 in the settings and see if that helps, I found directx11 to be completely unplayable to the point where it definitely shouldn’t have been verified, but 12 is much smoother.

I really don't blame developers for doing that. Hundreds of games come out all the time and it's often the difference between a developer making money and not. We want more games right? Blame the industry as a whole, not individual devs :P

Valve seem to only check the early experience of a game before verifying it. Seems like a limitation of their testing methodology but also I can't blame them for not wanting to run a game for hours just in case the framerate tanks later on. I hope steamdeck verification can encourage devs to try a bit harder to improve the Out-of-box experience. Verification has a tonne of benefits to the developer, so hopefully they return the favour with steamdeck enhancements! As for VRAM/BIOS edits for smoother gameplay, it's surprising the deck only allocates 1GB for VRAM out of the box. Would be a good idea for them to see if this can be added to the performance menu, even if it meant restarting the game to take effect.

I am playing Kena for a while now it was amazing on Steam Deck. Had it installed by using the epic game store. The performance was a lot better before the big update where it went to steam, too.

Unfortunately this is what happens when an indie dev punches above their weight class. I remember the PS5 version being a little rough around the edges as well and think it even crashes a few times at launch.

I feel steam says varified and shit not always same with playable v rising was trash for me . But not just that mega man x collection was playable and now non supported kinda threw me off because I bought it and it runs ok but the controls are at times for boss fights lame since I can't use all the buttons

This might not be a popular opinion but I played so many games on the xbox 360 that would drop down to the teens or even something like starfox on the snes at 20 fps that a game hovering around 30 fps is still awesome to me.

I turned Dynamic Resolution Target FPS ON, and set it to 40fps, then used the Steam Deck's settings to match 40fps max. The graphics take a little bit of a hit, but unless playing on big external monitor, it's not terrible (I'm a stickler for graphics usually and I'm quite happy with the end results). I'm able to run it very smoothly at a locked 40fps most of the time this way.

I tried playing it on Linux via lutris before, it ran fine at 60fps in game-play areas but the game stuttered hard when there was a video cut-scene I eventually gave up since I wanted to enjoy the story.

My wife beat Kena: Bridge of Spirits in it's entirety on the Steam Deck and LOVED it! She's working on a second playthrough of this game on the Steam Deck currently. She once reported some lag. But after I set the framerate cap to 30 fps the game no longer experienced slowdowns.
