This makes me very hopeful and excited for the future of the Linux desktop. It's improved so much over the years, but we are moving onto the next level. I have lived without windows for years, but for many gamers they have always one game that holds them back, if the sales continue to be good enough to convince the stubborn developers to support the platform and enable anticheat on Linux, we will be past the final major stumbling block.

Nvidia is also a big burden for open source graphics development. I really hope nvidia will start supporting Linux more but I am doubtful, the shitheads they are. I had nvidia mobile graphics for years and everything crashes all the time, all my nvidia xserver settings are disabled, can't fix screen tearing or anything. I hate nvidia with a passion for ruining my Linux experience for years. With my next computer I will switch to all amd. Fuck nvidia. And nvidia knows that with their edge on ray tracing and their cockblocking of linux they hold onto windows gaming for awhile. Not for long I hope.

The big thing that the Steam Deck has done for me is to make PC gaming affordable again. I haven't had a gaming PC or laptop for the last five years because of the rising hardware prices and general scarcity of integral parts. An all-in, handheld, PC gaming device for €419 is an incredible deal and has brought me back to Steam.

I want to say “but you could have gotten a non-gaming laptop and get similar performance” but the Deck with RDNA2 really did become a class of it’s own. If you had them available, you could have made an APU build in desktop, but for similar performance to a desktop APU, the Deck is crazy!

I’d say it’s a success. As a “normal” user (I don’t have too many demanding titles currently on the Deck, I’m probably more forgiving about some things like the screen not being able to turn off when downloading games or gamescope not properly isolating every game, such as Sky Rogue), this has been an absolute breeze. Just like browsing Steam on my desktop, it’s easy, it just works and the one or two actual problems I had were solved on a reboot on day 1. Haven’t had them since then, and this is now day 4 for me. Been playing Wargroove and getting around 8 hours of battery life at low brightness, 30fps and forcing TDP to 3W. It still uses close to 6W according to mangoHUD, but that’s good enough for now. This is basically what I wanted out of the Deck, and anything else is icing on the cake.

I sadly have some issues with a sticky b button so I’m sending it back to have it looked at. But even so, it’s still the best handheld I’ve ever owned (my previous favorite handheld was the psp and it’s even better than that). If I didn’t like it I would just sell it to someone who’s good at repairing their own tech devices. But it’s so damn good that I’d rather wait to get a good unit. Initially when they announced the steam deck, I though ”nah I’ll wait for the steam deck 2, 800p screen and 2 h battery life isn’t good enough”. But a handheld pc was to tempting so I gave in and reserved it, haha. You barely notice that it’s 800p and the battery life is decent enough (ofc we always want more but sadly they have to abide by the laws of physics…)

It is indeed game changing. I love my SteamDeck and I love to see how a community, never in touch with Linux is getting common with it and talking about it. I thought there would be more issues software-wise from the start, with people not knowing their way around yet, but that is absolutely not the case from what I have seen so far. On the contrary people are discovering Linux and start to use its billions of possibilities.

It really depends on your definition of success, all the sales so far are to early adopter enthusiasts. It will take into next year for Valve to fill that demand and even then it will still be well under 1 million units sold. That makes for a successful niche device, but probably isn't enough of a market for game developers to dedicate any significant resources to the deck. Early adopters won't mind, as the device is cool and they'll find workarounds and hacks to mitigate the downsides. What's yet to be seen is if the Deck will keep on selling in large numbers after 2023. The Switch has sold over 100 million units, while I don't expect the Deck to approach those sales figures (though it will be really cool if it does) even a tenth of that would make the Deck a big enough platform for developers to specifically tune their games for it. That's when I'd call it a breakout success for Valve because it would put their hardware business up alongside their store in importance.

@@AWellesley We would all love to Hope that people wouldn't be stupid enough to purchase from a scalper, unfortunately some people still do because they're desperate to get their hands on the device. I personally won't purchase from a scalper for the reason of clearly they're asking far too much for the device, and also because if I did purchase the device off of a scalper, I wouldn't get any guarantee that I could send it back to steam to get it serviced if it broke, so wouldn't even really be worth the money. But I'm glad that valve at least put in a few steps before scalpers can do what they do when they try to do this kind of thing. However anyone can create multiple accounts on steam if they wanted to, and purchase the device for its face value and then turn around and try to sell it for twice as much or a guess in this case four times as much as it's worth. Yes that drives up price for demand especially since the parts are limited, but in the long term it also keeps valve potentially putting more effort into creating these things, which means this device is here to stay and this device will eventually be much better as valve make adjustments to the technology to make it better on all of their systems. This is what I meant by it improves the technology with demand. Unfortunately there's going to be a lot of morons out there who are going to buy it from a scalper because they can't wait to get their hands on one.

@@5226-p1e Valve limited pre-orders to 1 per account and only allowed exisitng accounts that had already made a *purchase* on Steam prior to June 1 2021 to pre-order. That will have stymied the scalpers looking to buy hundreds of units ahead of real consumers. Some people are still scalping it, but I think it's mainly people who placed an order for themselves and are now tempted by the high ebay prices. Regardless even if that isn't correct, Scalpers don't drive demand - they exploit /existing/ demand when supplies are limited, i.e scalpers only buy products that they can sell on for a profit. The very fact that every Deck that appears on eBay is going for well above retail price shows that right now it's real consumer demand driving the steam deck sales. The question is whether that demand will continue after the first 500k to 1 million units have shipped.

A lot of the sells have to do the scalpers unfortunately. It's funny, normally we hate scalpers, but in this case it's actually helping Drive valve forward and keeping this product and improving it for the next versions of the device. Now I would never personally purchase from a scalper, because they could do anything to the console if they wanted to, and if there was something wrong with the device it's not as easy to get it fixed by Valve because you're not the original purchase.

For a total sucess it needed to ship globally the first days, here in South America we still don't have any news. Pricing or whatever. It started a little rough for a console-like release, only in certain regions. Hope people don't forget about this solid device and doesn't fall into being just a niche product. But I'm glad it brings light to Linux for once for the average people to see gaming is totally possible in Linux.

As a developer I am thrilled about the Steam Deck, especially having it as target platform for the future. It sets a baseline in PC gaming performance from this day and onward. And honestly the performance is kind of crazy. Sure, I am "only" making a ubi-art style action adventure game. but when you can run that at 4K at 120fps. you start to realize how powerful the device is. My rendering pipeline uses tons of effects, up towards 20-25 layers on-screen. tons of particles etc. Heck, running Cyberpunk 2077 at "attractive" settings while only utilizing 8W and still deliver solid 30fps. That's just pure madness. During "desktop use" the steamdeck uses around 1.3W. that's about the same as a Raspberry Pi Zero 2. :)
