Since this is something that can get confusing, here's what the heck Steam Play, Proton and Native Linux games are. #SteamDeckFollow me: https://twitter.com/gamingonlinuxRead news: https://www.gamingonlinux.com/Watch live: https://www.twitch.tv/gamingonlinuxThrow coins at me like I'm your Witcher: https://www.patreon.com/liamdaweJoin Discord: https://discord.gg/AghnYbMjYg

Before "Steam Play" became synonymous with compatibility layers, it was just the term Steam used to mean you do not have to buy games separately for Mac/Linux/Windows. The store used to show a small "SteamPlay" icon next to the supported platforms. Any game that did not have this icon had to be bought separately on each supported platform. I'm guessing they reappropriated the term because publishers typically did not opt out of cross-buying.

@@bloepje That's what I said. But instead of "all 3 platforms" it means all supported platforms.

Actually, it meant nothing more than that it runs on all 3 platforms. Except for GTA 3 , vice city and SA, there is no per platform license.

what i want to know is what is up with all the proton versions. i see valve updating proton all the time so shouldn't the latest version be the best one. Except an experimental one that can be used for testing things in case things get fucked up for older stuff, but besides that, whey isn't there just one stable version of proton.

a prime example is, until recently, Rocket League only worked on Proton 5, or the community made Proton-GE. After the most recent update it seems to work just fine on all newer versions of Proton. Sometimes when they make a change in a version of proton to add compatibility to one game, it can inadvertently break another game, and there's just so many games it's hard to test all of them.

@@gamingonlinux so they are trying to make sure there's one version to rule them all but aren't quite there yet? i would be fine with that knowing things will get better.

That is a whole 'nother complicated subject. Sometimes games only run with certain versions, so they keep older generations of Proton around for those until they find why they don't work in newer Proton. There's a lot more to it than that but that's the gist of it.

Thanks for making this video, this was helpful. Would you mind making a video how Heroic works? I've seen/read some conflicting information, such as forcing the compatibility in SteamOS will override what's set in Heroic. I haven't been able to figure out how to tell if this is true or not. I saw your video on using Heroic but I'm hoping to dive a little deeper in just what's going on. I found some games will only work when going into Heroic and launching from there but not when launching from SteamOS (after using Heroic Bash Launcher). In games like Sifu, I found launching them from Heroic performs significantly better than if you launch them through the Heroic Bash Launcher made scripts.

So, wouldn’t it just make sense to play these games on windows instead?

Not necessarily. The benefit of having the proton compatibility layer is in part that it gives Valve more control with integrating features across games, and providing that for SteamOS. This is in part why Steam Input works out better for games where on windows there would be issues (EA Origin games are an obvious example). Another benefit is the obvious one where it allows them to have support for Windows apps, while providing the feature support from a custom Linux-based OS, which they wouldn't be able to do if they just used windows on it's own (since Windows isn't provided in a way analogous to how Linux is, only Microsoft can use windows in such a fashion).

I have really loved my deck. Sadly it has a hardware fault (L3 does not respond) so I am RMAing it, but that hasnt stopped me using it in the meantime as that isnt used for much. Very neat device and the compatability is impressive.

I want to think about these. Everything on life is not served on a silver platter, and Steam deck exists because people are passionate about graphics API and OS environment hacks/workarounds. And if you want to stay ignorant thats your choice, but please speak for yourself.

Hey did you ever get that issue resolved? I hope it works alot better now. There's a community on reddit that i always go to whenever i need support for the steam deck. It's called r/steamdeck. Theres alot of active people who help with technical issues just like yours in case you still need help. Of course you may have to send into steam support for them to look into it, but i always check reddit to see of anyone had similar issues.
