If you are suffering with the ram leak, then you can increase the page file size from 1gb to 8gb. Its a bandaid solution but it will extend playtime

RDR2 on a handheld...let that sink in for a minute. I absolutely LOVE my Steam Deck!!! Valve and the developers that are supporting the platform are knocking it out of the park!!!!

I ran into that issue when I switched from Vulcan to Direct X. I needed to reinstall the game to be able to modify the graphic settings.

Yes, it still crashes as it did before in any other proton than 6.3.8 wich doesn't work no more.

When you force a specific proton for a game, in this case experimental, it automatically installs it when launching. There isn't a need to do so before going to the game like that.

@@m3anmug He's going to a seperate page and downloading the proton version before going back to the game. Its an unnecessary step. On the actual game page when you select and force a particular proton version on a per game basis it automatically downloads it when launching the game. (In the same way shader cache does) No reason to download it yourself - just select force proton version-x and then launch game.

Be careful, because that only fixes the not launching part, but the Game keeps CRASHING every hour or so due to vram leaks, so i woulnd't call It playable on the deck. The Game ran fine without crashes with proton 6.3.8 but since last update it doesn't start if you use it, so at this moment there is no way to play RDR 2 on the deck without constant crashes.

Is that what it is? It runs fine for a bit then....just....freezes. I had to re do a few missions, and I am at the beginning of the game during the snow storm parts, so that's a bitch.

I've found that using bleeding edge beta within proton experimental works but crashes due to memory leaks, however switching it to direct x may fix that. Lasted longer for me until I had to go. I also heard it doesn't render water correctly but it may fix the memory leak issue.

Mine acts as if it were never installed. I downloaded R* Launcher via Desktop Mode and ran it after install, spent the next hour downloading RDR2, and after going back to game mode or even in Desktop Mode, the launcher doesn't see it and wants to download it ALL again. Is there a quick fix? My bandwidth cap isn't unlimited, and I am not okay with having over 110gb of useless filled space on my SSD. I'm certainly not willing to double it. Note: My RDR copy is the Launcher version. I bought it prior to being available on steam, and don't like Epic.

For anyone that suffers crashes, HERE is the fix (i got It from reddit but for some reason youtbe delete my comment if i put the link to the topic..), and it consist in increasing the swap memory to suport the ram when it colapses, so you only need to have more than 8gb of free space in the ssd, and then you have to go to desktop Mode, open the konsole/terminal, and put this, line by line, one at a time (all is next to a "#" is a comment, you only have to put what its before the "#"): passwd # Create a root password for example passwd 1234 sudo steamos-readonly disable # Disable the read only FS cd /home # There is a "swapfile" located here we'll reuse it sudo swapoff -a # Stop swap process sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=swapfile bs=1G count=8 # Increase swap to 8gb sudo mkswap swapfile # swap ready file again sudo swapon swapfile # Activate swap I've tested it myself and played for 4 hours without crashes.

I use proton experimental where i can on my steam deck. Thanks to it i got no stuttering in any games i play. When i used proton 7 some games were always stuttering from time to time. Does anyone know why proton experimental gives such better game experience?

Because on the first run you would be generating the shaders, it's not that Experimental performs better it's that by running it first you're giving it the shaders it needs.

Keeps crashing frequently though.. There should be laws that protect the consumer against this. When a company updates a game they should be responsible for updating it correctly to support all the platforms where the game worked in the previous update.

@@gamingonlinux Yeah, that is true indeed. You are right. If anything it would be Valve's responsibility, but I think the game shows as even not verified for Deck yet, right? I just felt a bit tricked and went on a rant up there I guess, because I bought the game for the Deck, seemed to be working fine and a couple of days later it just kept crashing.. But I guess that just comes with using a Steam Deck for now. If its not verified you play the game at your own risk :)

The Steam Deck is not a platform Rockstar officially support, consumer laws do nothing. It's the Windows game, run through Proton.

Just picked up this game on the Winter Sale. Having issues though. Whenever I launch the game my driver appears to be GAMESCOPE. I enabled Proton Experimental and even placed the beta to be Bleeding Edge. What else do I need to do to enable the Vulkan APi? Thank you in advance
