How is the Linux Arch for gaming without running SteamOS? i.e. Can you run most GOG games and emulation without using the SteamOS front end? I don't plan on getting the first gen Steam Deck, but am interested in more powerful handheld Gaming devices like the Aya Neo Next/Next 2.

congrats on getting one. I've had mine now for about 3 weeks and it is really amazing for a person like me. I can treat it like a gaming console and also a pc and it just has that great open source feeling that i can fiddle with so many elements as to how i want it. Also if you have not then give the xcloud gaming and geforce now a go. Xcloud looks brilliant on it, yes you have to have a fairly decent broadband speed but mines about average and i've been playing high spec grounded and hitman on the steam deck with near to nothing latency.

It would be an absolute pro move if Valve offered these third party companies a cut from sales on their devices. I bet they could sacrifice like 5% from their 30% cut for such affiliate program and it would be a big deal for companies like GPD and OneX for them to start pushing SteamOS even more.

Not interested in Nintendo titles? Are you frequently busy juggling taking care of your home, family, and job? Only have an hour or two to game? Do you hate cell phone games? @@davoncci GPD got really defensive when people asked them why their $1,000+ handheld was using Vega while the $400 Steam Deck was using RDNA 2. With that being said, I can understand why a small company their size would feel threatened when a company like Valve enters their market. Lately though, GPD worked freaking wonders on their GPD Win Max 2 and it even comes with the Ryzen 7 6800u. Which offers 12CU's of RDNA 2 and 8 Zen 3+ cores; so it beats the Steam Deck in both CPU and GPU workloads. Hell, the GPD Win Max 2 also comes with a 67whr battery while the Steam Deck only offers 40whr. They also have support for dual NVME SSD's. It'll be expensive like always, but it ain't that bad if you want a truly premium handheld.

People were very cynical about Valve's efforts and their chances when they started (*especially* Linux users who love to moan), but I'm just wallowing in the fact that things are actually working out and loving it. I wonder if Ayaneo OS will have the kind of scripting needed to launch .exe files from the file browser with Proton, without running the Steam client first? I see people keep moaning about the lack of native Linux ports, and how this is hurting that (they're wrong, that will only be short-term), but they're focusing on the wrong thing. What we really need is a freaking Windows replacement, and before too long, we should be able to call our OS "Windows Compatible" -- or something to that effect. ;-)

The two already co-exist, and why download a random exe if there's already a Linux app? Linux will never be Windows. Compatibility layers are a thing but there's limits. Better solution is introducing our ecosystem to people. Can you imagine the chaos if people try to use linux as windows? Downloading exes from internet and thinking that's the way? People buying iPhones learn app store not search for apks. This is not a cheap windows, It's linux and you have to learn rhe conventions for your sake.

I was one of those people who was upset at the SteamOS initial launch. I thought that the fact that they had not got Fallout 4 ported over to Linux with money was such a blunder considering it launched the same day as SteamOS. Now when I look back at it that was just a bandage solution for the root problem. It was never going to be reasonable to expect Valve to pay developers to natively port each big game to Linux and would've been a waste of resources. Proton is the ultimate solution and shows Valve has excellent business making decisions when it comes to where they are investing their money towards their goals.

@@AdmiralBison Support for non-Steam platforms (like GOG) are at an earlier stage of development, so while it's still possible there are rough edges & it's not so easy. I'd suggest waiting 6 months. No real idea about modding, but I guess you'd need to use Wine to run Windows versions of most tools for developing mods. At least Wine makes it very easy to install & run Windows programs. (But sharing their data files with games may be harder, if they don't directly run under Wine.) I'd really suggest installing Linux onto a second harddrive (so no need to risk repartition), and then you can boot into Linux to try it out, but then boot back into Windows for stuff you haven't got worked out yet.

As Steam on Linux gets more popular, hopefully people look at fixing issues like this. But if you are using Wayland (as most modern distros are) try switching to X to see if it makes any difference (Wayland is still a bit immature AFAIK); just a wild idea, no idea if it will help.

In the end, an open source OS is the ONLY reasonable choice. Windows is proprietary, but not to OEMs. Instead, it's proprietary to Microsoft. So OEMs get into a position of creating a product they don't really control and thus, they are reliant on Microsoft's good will.

[ 2022-07-21 08:34:20Z ] 👍 1

Agreed. Linux Open Source benefits OEMs - cut Windows licensing costs, get higher profit margins from already slim hardware earnings. More control, as you mentioned, for them to make custom interfaces...or just allow community based and third party front ends to do that. For end users - Linux Open Source will not be closed off and wall gardened like Microsoft is trying to do with Windows. Users control and gatekeep what they want, it's clean, with less advertising bloatware than Windows. I'm hoping Linux will develop translation layers to play 90% of past PC games, mods and 100% emulation. I believe gamers migrating to Linux will spur developers to consider Linux a powerful and better alternative gaming platform.

Open source would certainly be the only reasonable choice in a perfect world. Who wouldn't want everything to be free and open for anyone to do with as they please? But in reality open source comes with serious limitations. Like it or not, Microsoft is very good at creating consumer-grade products that average consumers can understand and use easily. Linux, at its core, it simply just not suited for those who aren't knowledgeable (or aren't willing to be) about computers. Plus, unlike open source, you have the massive advantage of support with proprietary systems. Not just 3rd party hardware/software support, but customer support. As a Linux user, I tend to prefer to tinker and fix stuff myself, but I can still appreciate how important it is to MOST people to simply have someone else fix their computer problems for them rather than fix it themselves (e.g. calling customer support). Much like how when someone's car breaks down, they just take it to a mechanic rather than jump under the hood and fix it themselves. With all that said, I'm extremely glad that Linux is becoming a serious competitor in the gaming landscape. I hope that maybe someday, though unlikely, it can become a serious name in the world of desktop computing overall. Microsoft desperately needs competition, and the more (Linux, Google, Apple, etc) the merrier.

I bet it will not transfer to the desktop. Can't get rid of a good tradition and meme after all. There will come a time when through some kind of open source driver magic Linux handhelds will actually outperform similar desktops, but the desktops will still be bound to Windows because of Nvidia still not open sourcing their drivers and giving more performance for some proprietary video codec every other proprietary company decides to use. /s in case that was not obvious enough.

(nes mini and snes mini) or maybe sony, they already did some experimentations with ps2 linux and yellowdoglinux for the ps3, not to mention "Playstation Classics" consoles, sega also did it with gamegear micro, and atari has the new VCS. nintendo and sony probably would try to lock it to their stores, but even that would be good to make microsoft less of an treat for then.

To be honest, stadia did already take the first step in actual linix gaming. And to be honest, steamdeck runs windows games through proton

the only thing i dont like about steam os is... its linux with locked on training wheels. cant install software not approve by valve.. im using the steamdeck as my main pc atm, great machine. plug a usbc hub with everything and its a little beast! buuuut... if the i want to install software, for example Bpytop, a little monitoring device that run in python on terminal, i cant. its not in the signature keys of steam os. i told myself ill just add it to the signatures. nope, locked down. cant access the AUR too, the staple of arch linux.. steam os is based on arch but nope, cant get there.. its a bit frustrating. i understand why they did it of course.. but its still painful.. they should add a dev mode that let us thinker with the software more. bury it deep deep in the option so mom and pop cant find it and break their system if they must.. but give me that option.. linux aint linux without options

I love what it's done for the handheld gaming space, but , I am especially happy that it is Linux, as far away as possible from Microsoft! Also, the Steam Deck bringing the Linux awareness coaslesces nicely with the recent advances in Gnome and KDE desktops. Hoping that Valve keeps the ball rolling for the Linux transition, because there is still a lot a work to do on SteamOS to make it truly a main stay in the [mainstream] gaming/PC space.

I've been using linux for over 10 years, I'm so thankful for all the contributions people put forward to make all the software, from apps to architecture, from drivers to distros, and everything outside and in between. Seeing the success of Deck and SteamOS, proton, dvxk, and now witnessing these other handheld manufacturers entering the arena wielding linux and open source software, just wow, hats off to Valve. It was the thousands of hands contributors over the years their giant push that put linux gaming in the great state it is in at this moment. BTW I just got my 512 Steam Deck today (now I run arch)

Love this, maybe in half a decade or so we can knock windows down a peg, and hopefully people stop blindly buying these "AAA" as well as stop whaling so badly on mobile games to knock these companies down a leg and set them straight. Though I fear it'll only get worse from here on for a lot of things.

The two big selling points of the Steam Deck are the price and SteamOS, Windows just isn't that great on a portable gaming devices as it's not designed for that, SteamOS works much better in that sense. I think rivals of the Steam Deck should use SteamOS or at least offer it as an option because they are already fighting an uphill battle on the price point, they don't need to do so on the OS side of things. It's also a win win for both sides, Valve wants SteamOS on more devices to push Linux gaming, the portable gaming devices is a growing sector so even thought rivals are more expensive, they are likely to profit on this because of the exposure Steam Deck is doing in that sector for PC portable gaming.

Too bad installing nexus mods is literally entirely impossible. I've been trying for the past week, following every tutorial under the sun to the letter, but always fails for one reason or another. No mods, no gaming.

It's the snowball effect. Aka the opposite of the chicken and egg problem. When you solve the chicken and egg problem, you create the snowball effect, where every gain of marketshare makes it easier to obtain the next marketshare gain, because you're removing the thing that was previously holding down marketshare.

This is great, not only is there more competition and choice for handheld Gaming PCs, but also the software that runs on Linux, helping Linux develop into a powerful gaming platform that can rival Windows. I really want to migrate to Linux and am looking forward to getting the Aya Neo Next 2 with its discrete GPU. I hope Linux has progressed so far that I can play 90% of all past PC games and 100% of Emulation.

I'm hoping they make steam os not just available but compatible with most modern desktop computers, I tried linux mint a few years ago and it wouldn't install because of my corsair keyboard. I'm sure that problem has been addressed by now but it makes me wonder about my other hardware, for example my oculus rift.

In desktops, I would love to see the new intel GPUs outperform MS WOS in dx <12 games with proton. And as they are going to be the cheaper ones for dx12 - Vulkan because they perform worse in dx<12 in MS WOS, increase the li(gnu)x user base. But nobody tested them on li(gnu)x yet.

I don't think Ayaneo understands just how much work and maintenance goes into maintaining a OS like SteamOS. They would have to work closely with the Linux community like Valve in order to make sure their games run without much issue. They can't just make the OS and be one and done and never touch it again or fix all the games that will get broken later on
